With heavy hearts, we wish to announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Mae Louise Bennett, on September 5, 2023, in Cardston Alberta.
Mae Louise Herr was born November 30, 1939, in Cardston. She completed her schooling in the area and married Bill Bennett on November 15, 1958. Together they had 2 daughters, Marg and Danielle, and a son, Bill. Mae’s children were her focus, and she ensured they were having fun, and learning skills and discipline in the sport of their choice. Countless hours were spent in ice rinks and on ball diamonds. After her children were grown, Mae could be seen cheering on her grandchildren in those same ice rinks and ball diamonds, even driving for hours to Saskatchewan to watch her granddaughter Michelle figure skate, or her other granddaughter, Christina play fast ball. Mae herself was very athletic, and when she could no longer play ball, she was content in watching her beloved Blue Jays. In 1987, Mae was inducted to the Cardston Centennial Sports Hall of Fame for her outstanding services in organizing, managing, and coaching softball, figure skating and hockey. A proud moment for us all!
Mae was employed at Red Rooster/Reddi Mart for many years. Her grandchildren could hardly wait to get to “grandma’s store” to see what special treats were waiting for them.
Mae loved to play cards and tell stories about her family, in which there were many with her 17 siblings. As her health declined, and she had difficulty leaving her home, she looked forward to phone calls letting her know about her grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s activities. We could all expect her call on our birthdays, she never forgot.
Mae is survived by her children Marg (John) Gibson, Danielle ( predeceased by Farrell) Bernicky, Bill ( Linda) Bennett, 9 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, we ask you consider a donation to a sports organization which may help a child play a sport they may not otherwise have the chance to play (example Kid Sport)
We will love and miss you always mom and grandma, fly free, no more pain.
Please join her family in celebrating her life on September 13, 2023, from 11:00-2:00 at the United Church, Cardston, Alberta. There will be an Interment at 3:00 at Woolford cemetery for those wishing to attend.
