Kirby Leon Big Swallow (O’taamissaapii) passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital after a short illness surrounded by his family. Kirby was born on March 22, 1981, to the late Dorothy Ann Big Swallow and biological father Wilbur Yellow Old Woman Sr. in Cardston, Alberta. Kirby is survived by his children. Latrell (Drexler), Janelle, Kylin (Kirby 2), Leland and Liam Big Swallow. He was a proud dad to his children. His precious granddaughter Daxlynn whom he loved and cherish. His sister, Melissa (Kieven) Shade. His special nephews and nieces: Caleb, Casey, Cate, Charlie, Scarlett, Sharlotte, Jane, Dyson and Toby. Kirby loved spending time with them, and he was so proud of their accomplishments. His stepbrothers Cory and Jerome Calf Robe. They had a strong bond for each other. Kirby is also survived by his grandpa, Donald Big Swallow Sr; Uncles: Pat (Delia) Twigg, Albert and Curtis (lisa) Big Swallow; Aunties: Monica (Eric) Plaited Hair, Collette and Lucille Big Swallow, Angie (Kenny) Creighton, Delores Big Swallow and Cindy Plaited Hair. His numerous cousins and extended family members from the Twigg clan. Kirby took his cousins, Truman, Donald and Robert Big Swallow, Tiffany Calf Robe and Candace Twigg as his brothers and sisters.
Kirby was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy Anne Big Swallow, his siblings, Christina Calf Robe and Curtis ‘Bob’ Big Swallow. His grandma Beatrice Big Swallow, Uncles: Donald Twigg and Leslie Big Swallow, Auntie Delores Calf Robe, his cousin Michael Big Swallow. Kirby was a stepson to the late Curtiss Calf Robe Sr. and the late John Heavy Shields. They were an important part in Kirby’s upbringing and life.
Kirby received his formal education from Saipoyi Elementary School, FP Walshe and Kainai High School. He obtained his high school diploma in 1998. He attended Lethbridge Community College in the Criminal Justice Program, and Red Crow Community College Agriculture Program. He achieved a certificate in 2019. Kirby also achieved numerous certificates such as: his WIMSI, CSTS, Front Loader and Forklift Operator, journeymen in carpentry, Standard First Aid and CPR. Kirby worked at numerous jobs and at the time of his passing, he was employed installing solar panels in Vulcan, Alberta. He participated in various sports such as, football, basketball, and baseball. He had the opportunity to travel with the St. Mary’s Warriors to Mexico and Hawaii. Kirby enjoyed travelling with his grandfather, uncle and aunties, The family trip to Vancouver, BC. was the most enjoyable. His favorite things to do and past times were fishing, reading, card games, yard work, picnics, watching movies, learning to speak the Blackfoot language, and listening to music.
Kirby will be surely missed for his compassion, laughter, generosity, empathy, encouragement and helping hand. He brought love and happiness into our lives. Kirby the day you made your journey home. You took a piece of all our hearts. You are with mom, grandma, Christina and Bob. Your love, laughter and memories will live on with us, we are for ever grateful for the time we shared.
The Wake Service will be at White Calf Hall, Stand Off on Monday, July 11, 2022 from 7:00 - 11:00 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Blood Reserve on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at 11:00 am with Father Pawel Andrasz officiating. Interment to follow at One Spot Cemetery.
