Shawnee Brave Rock “Itsspikitsstakiaakii: High Holy Offering Woman” was born in on August 4th, 1986 in Lethbridge, Alberta; she passed away on May 20th, 2023 in Calgary, Alberta.
Shawnee’s parents are Ramona Big Head and Mark Brave Rock. Shawnee is one of three identical triplet girls who include Aloni and Oshana. By the time the triplets came into this world, they already had two older siblings, Carl (Tucker) and Galena (Sissy). The triplets were soon fighting over their two younger siblings, Jesse and Gloria (Saya). Their father went on to have three more children: Starly, Letisha and J-Man. So, right from the beginning, Shawnee was surrounded by a large family.
Shawnee came into this world as a fighter. She must’ve already had some pretty good moves as she nudged her way to become the first of her triplet sisters to come into this world. Albeit by about 7 minutes. She was only a few weeks old, when she was diagnosed with a rare disease that attacked her bowels. As a result, she had two operations by the time she was three months old. We always thought she was the toughest baby of all.
As we pondered why triplets? Some very spiritual friends suggested this theory: “the three sisters simply could not be separated in Heaven and begged Creator to send them to Earth together” Then, as God was looking for an unsuspecting family, He caught a glimpse of 20 year old Ramona who just happened to be passing by minding her own business.
The life of a triplet is one where only other triplets will understand. There are a few tricks that Shawnee and her sisters played on her unsuspecting family and teachers. One time, their grandpa, Peter Big Head had 7 loonies and asked all the grandkids to stand in line while he distributed the loonies. When he got to the last triplet standing there with her hand held out, grandpa had no more loonies. The triplet began to cry as he scrambled to find out what happened. Basically, another triplet got back in line and took the extra loonie.
Another favorite memory was on April Fool’s Day, during grade 2, the triplets decided to switch classes. But, they soon realized that they should’ve have planned it better when they got caught because they didn’t know which desk to sit in once they got into the classrooms.
As Shawne grew older, she became a girl that no one wanted to mess with. She definitely could dish it out to her siblings, but would be the first to stand in the line of fire to protect her brothers and sisters.
As a young mother, Shawnee loved and cherished her children. But, even her babies had trouble telling her apart from her triplet sisters. Her first-born son, Everett, would get his mother and her sisters mixed up. He would be crying to go to one of his identical aunties while his mother was holding him in her arms. Shawnee would hold Everett in her arms to face her while she reminded him, “I’m your mommy!”
Shawnee went on to have three daughters who are just as gorgeous as she is. Her daughters, Acacia Love, Sioux and Delilah all possess their mothers unique sense of style and stunning looks. She was at her calmest when she was holding her granddaughter, Renesme. She hadn’t yet met her latest grandchild, Aizllyn, that will be a reunion that she will look forward to in the future.
Shawnee was a talented artist who was full of passion. She was also a very sensitive soul with deep love and compassion for those around her. One of her best qualities was her raw honesty. She had the ability to make long and deep friendships even with the most humblest of God’s children on Earth. Her friends were not just mere acquaintances, but deep loving brothers and sisters who were there for each other through the darkest times and the times when there was an abundance of laughter.
Shawnee was proud of the fact that she helped create the Deathbridge Derby Dames, a Roller Derby Club in Lethbridge. She also attended the University of Lethbridge where she hoped to major in English.
Shawnee’s fun qualities was walking around the house singing her favorite tunes. She loved psychobilly punk rock n’ roll music. One of her favorite bands, The Raygun Cowboys composed a song just for her entitled, “She Came from Kainai”.
As a Kainai woman, Shawnee had to face a lot of trials and obstacles that only she could overcome. But, throughout it all, she never stopped loving her children. Her strong voice and unapologetic hugs and kisses will be missed by her numerous nephews and nieces.
Shawnee will be missed by her children, Everett (Portlin) Soop, Acacia Soop (Thunder Crow Shoe), Sioux and Delilah Day Rider and her two granddaughters, Renesme and Aizllyn Soop. Her parents, Ramona Big Head and Mark Brave Rock. Her siblings, Aloni Brave Rock, Oshana (Jorge) Christiansen, Jesse, Gloria, Starly, Letisha and J-Man Brave Rock. And several nieces and nephews.
She will also be missed by her uncles and aunties: Floyd (Maxine), Leonard, Ivyanne Big Head, Jennifer (Terry) Ivins, Emile Big Head & Yvonne (Don) Shouting. Faron and Wanda Brave Rock and their families. And her Grandfather, Jack Red Crow.
Shawnee will be reunited by her many family members who’ve crossed over to the Great Sand Hills including her sister, Galena Brave Rock; her brother, Carl Brave Rock and her niece, Teesh Ansh Morigeau; Her cousins Jovian Big Head and Megan Heavy Shields; Her grandparents: Peter Big Head and Gloria Red Crow; Wilfrid and Florence Brave Rock.
