It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Beatrice “Bea” Bullshields (nee Lum) on Thursday, May 18, 2023. Bea passed away peacefully at the Cardston Hospital ending her battle with cancer. Bea was surrounded by her ever loving family.
Bea was born, Beatrice Bernadette Lum on December 1, 1945. She is survived by her loving husband, Charles “Chucky” Bullshields Jr., Her siblings Bertha Andrew, Betty Andrew (Mike Shottanana), Maximillian Andrew (Cyndi), Peter Andrew (Delores); her children Morning Star, Marsly Bullshields; her grandchildren she raised Jason Kipp (Sandy), David Kipp, Lisa Knife, Tina Knife (Sonny), Ronald “Doron” (Nikki), Joseph and Natasha Moore; her siblings -in-law Diana Plume, Pauline White Grass, Melinda Bullshields, Jeffrey Bullshields (Vicky), Muriel Bullshields and Newton Bullshields (Lena); 12 grandchildren Ronald “Big Mac” (Anita), Katrina, Kim (Casper), Kasandra, Veronica, Grant, Autumn (Trevor), Doron (Nikki), Natasha, Beau, Shai-Lee and Nathan and 41 great grandchildren.
Bea attended school in Cranbrook, B.C. In 1986 Bea was introduced to Chucky by Muriel. It was then she began her life within the Blood Tribe. Bea was very traditional and whole heartedly followed the Blackfoot way of life. She and Chuck joined the Horn Society in 2012. Beatrice was given the Blackfoot name Niitsinimakii “Lone Captured Woman”. Bea excelled in her beadwork and was known for her “beaded back scratchers”. Bea’s grandmother taught her how to bead “little Indians” which she wanted to bring back and share as part of her Ktunuxa heritage.
Some of Bea’s favorite pastimes were having and going to garage sales and the casino. Bea loved playing cards. On New Year’s eve we would celebrate by playing Aggravation at Muriel’s home. We had a lot of fun. The following year Bea requested we play at her house as Muriel’s chairs are too high and my legs are dangling. We had a good laugh. Bea loved humor and had the most beautiful smile that lifted hearts and spirits.
Bea was a very caring woman. She raised her children and after their passing, she raised her grandchildren. Bea instilled in her family the importance of education, spirituality and hard work. Bea was especially proud of her children and grandchildren’s achievements. Raising her children was a challenge for her and Chuck, however they had so much love, care and compassion for them.
Bea was a survivor. She faced any and all her challenges head on. Bea lost one of her legs, due to medical reasons, but that didn’t slow her down. Bea could often be seen wheeling up and down her ramp to feed her many dog visitors (at least 10+ dogs), tending to her yard and chasing her cats and doing this with a big smile.
Bea leaves her loving family in this earthly place to reunite with her family in the Creator’s camp: her parents Theresa Andrew and Richard Lum; brothers Richard Lum and Marvin Andrew; children Margaret Joseph, Maureen Joseph, Sydney Morrigeau, Deborah Patrick; parents-in-law Charles & Irene Bullshields; siblings-in-law Wayne Plume, Beatrice Bullshields, Lillian Mistaken Chief, and Kobin Bullshields; two great -grandchildren Dezirea Joseph and Tamryn Gravelle; her beloved cat: Minnie Mouse; her special friends, Muriel Bullshields and Lena Bullshields; and special thanks to Dr. Susan Christensen.
Chuck wishes for a safe journey for his beloved Bea, to the Great Sandhills. I hope that your children, parents and family, that went home before you, embrace you as you step into paradise.
A Wake Service will be held at the Senator Gladstone Hall, Blood Reserve on Sunday, May 28 from 5:00 - 11:00 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at the Senator Gladstone Hall on Monday, May 29 at 11:00 am. Interment will take place in the St. Catherine’s Cemetery.
