ROSE MARIE DAVIS (Kiimatakii)
It is with Heavy Hearts we announce the Passing of our Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt & Friend, Rose Marie Davis (Kiimatakii).
Rose was born on the Blood Indian Reserve on November 12, 1938, daughter of Frank Big Sorrel Horse and Margaret Davis. She passed away on March 11, 2019. As a child she spent her early years at the Old Davis Farmstead with Grandpa Charlie & Grandma Rosie Davis, Mother Margaret Davis & Brother Wayne Davis. In later years the family moved to Cardston, living in a tent for a year behind the Blood Indian Hospital when Grandpa Charlie was hospitalized. It was with devotion & love that Grandma Rosie wanted to be close to Grandpa while in hospital. After the first year, Mom Davis built the existing house where Rose & Wayne grew up.
It was in the mid 50’s and early 60’s that Rose spent time at the St. Paul’s Residential school. She also attended the Cardston School system.
Mom had a wonderful gift of cooking, her famous yeast buns, cinnamon buns, cabbage rolls, stuffed green peppers, anything mom had, she made the best gourmet meal ever, especially her fried kidney with onion. Mom was a very humble lady, not wanting more than she needed, always making good with what she had. She had many talents including sewing and crocheting, she attended hair dressing school in Lethbridge, where she later would always be called upon to perm or color hair for family & friends. She was a hardworker, always working alongside grandma, she was an immaculate homemaker, and always had a clean spotless home. She also had a love for her pet Dachshunds... Butch, Willy, Daisy & Lucy, and her German Shephard Max & her Fox Hound Gucci.
Fond Memories that Family & Friends have of her include yearly summer trips to Yakima Washington, for apple & cherry picking, family dinners, picnics, & her yearly trips to the Calgary Stampede for the parade & chuck wagons. Rose traveled extensively throughout Canada & the United States for seasonal work, always remembering to bring home fruit & treats for everyone. There are many memories of her time spent at the “sheep farm.” She could always be heard, with her vivacious laugh while watching her favourite programs, Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, & the Golden Girls. Her laughter could be heard throughout the house. She would also be on the phone with her cousins, the late Olive & Vivian Davis and her friend Joyce ...they’d be telling stories of days gone by and the mischief they got in–stories of a life time of memories to be passed on from generation to generation. She always had a close relationship with all her family & friends.
Rose had her kiipiitapookaa’s Tyler (Buster) Davis, & Tealson (Magoo) Smith, both of whom from toddlers to nearly teens, could always be found with grandma, sleeping with her at night. The boys would often be teased by their grandma Rose that when they got married “what would they do then?” and their reply was always… “Sleep with you”. Rose loved each and everyone of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces & nephews. Without a doubt, whenever they came to visit, you could find them in her room as all the kids knew where grandma kept her stash of goodies for them all. Grandma’s room and bed were a safe haven for all who entered. She wasn’t known as just mom or grandma, she was “mom” to many of her grandchildren, nieces, nephews and so many people. She just had that nature about her; everyone called her mom.
Mom spent her final years at the Good Samaritans Lee Crest. We would like to thank them for the wonderful care that she received during her time there, a special thank you to Vivian, Marny, Vanessa, Larae, Leah, Jamie & Dana. Thank you to all the staff of Lee Crest for taking such good care of her. Your kindness & care did not go unnoticed.
Mom’s legacy will live on through her teachings and her values which she instilled in her children, grandchildren.
Rose is survived by her children; Daughter Daphne Soup & children: Jeron, Janetta & Megan; Daughter Darlene Davis & children: Brad (Inez) Heavy Shields, Ayisha (Kirby) Heavy Childs, Shilow (Jesse) Heavy Shields, Kiya Davis, Tasheena Smith, Tealson Mr. Magoo Smith; Son Winslow (Tracy) Davis & children: Kari (Tav), Reggie (AJ), Jessica (James), Parker (Winter) & Daughter Brenda (Rusty) Davis & Children: Tyler, Dwight, Devin; her Brother Wayne (Christine) Davis, also Special Nieces & Nephew Darcy Bossman, Stanley Big Sorrel Horse, Flora Scout, J.R Manson.
