Ginger Grace Old Shoes - Day Chief / Siipiyawatto (Walks at night) passed away suddenly on Sunday July 16th, 2023.
Ginger was born on July 7th, 1983 and resided on the Blood reserve until the time of her passing. She began the first part of her primary schooling at Standoff Elementary on the Blood Reserve. For the remainder of her primary education, she attended Assumption Elementary located in Lethbridge, Alberta. She attended St. Francis for Jr. High and finished junior high at the High School named University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. She went on to graduate from Catholic Central High School in the year of 2001 in Lethbridge, Alberta. Ginger attended Spokane Community College in Spokane Washington for her Associate Diploma, but was
unable to complete school due to a hit and run car accident. Ginger enjoyed playing basketball and won the free throwing contest for St. Francis where she went onto compete in Airdrie for the regional free throw. She also played first string for the University of Chicago High School as the only native amongst African Americans.
Ginger loved to sing and had a beautiful voice. She took singing lessons and sang in choirs while pursuing her education. Ginger enjoyed her music so much that she had a large collection of songs to sing along to where she would play a song on repeat until she knew the lyrics. Ginger had made playlists that were used for traveling that everyone would all sing along to at the top of their voices out of joy.
Ginger liked to bake and cook which fueled her interest in wanting to go back to school for culinary arts after her daughters were old enough. Ginger had a rice mix that she was well known for by family and friends. Ginger also enjoyed fishing and would take her girls to go with her cousin Dwight Old Shoes at the St. Marys irrigation canal by her home. Ginger believed in the native religion and for a short time joined the buffalo women society but due to her accident she had trouble with her hip and knees. She had joined the
group with her late grandmother Joyce Viola Old Shoes. Ginger enjoyed singing and playing hand games where she was able to travel with the family to many hand game tournaments during her life. Locations include; Muckleshoot WA, Wellpinit WA, Hobbema AB, Ft. Dushane Utah, Ft. hall Idaho, Coeur d'alene Idaho, and
throughout Southern Alberta which includes but not limited to Stand-off, Brocket, Siksika, and Sarcee.
Although Ginger had many interests, her greatest joy was when her two daughters were born, Ada Joy Dee and Leia Rose Old Shoes / Day Chief. Ginger was a kind, gentle, caring person. She gave assistance to anyone in need such as giving rides to appointments, having empathy for those who needed financial assistance, and
providing for her family where she would cook her rice and pasta specialties. She loved children and helped raise her nieces Eva, Isabelle, and Ina, and her nephews, Vincent, Koda, Tobias, Tyrus, Wyatt, and Julian. She also enjoyed extended children of family members that include baby Marcus, Viola and the newest member of the family Saturn Rose. Ginger was a shining light for us that has diminished leaving us sad and lonely due to
her passing.
