PAULINE EAGLE SPEAKER (Aista’stiishohm) passed away in Cardston on January 30, 2016 at the age of 86 years.
Pauline was born December 9, 1929 on the Brocket Reserve to Bernard Bastien and May (Bull Pen) Bastien. When she married Orton Eagle Speaker, they moved to the state of Washington. Here Orton worked at different jobs and when they came back they made their home on the Brocket Reserve with her dad Bernard Bastien. In 1956, Orton and Pauline moved to the Blood Reserve with 30 head of cows and bought some land where they put their cows. They started their homestead, and their children started school in the year 1956.
In her early years, Pauline did a lot of crafts. She did some beadwork for so many dancing outfits. Pauline was well known for sewing her tipis as people from all different places bought them. Pauline and her daughter Joanne made a tipi for the Buffalo Jump, and today it still stands on display. Pauline also worked in Lethbridge making couches. Pauline did a lot of work in her own home. She was a great mother, grandmother, and great-grandma. All this evident from the names Orton had for her, “Gramma Cook, Pikanaiki and Brocket.” Pauline began her Christian walk in 1989, along with Orton.
Pauline and Orton had eight beautiful children. She had numerous relations on the Blood Reserve and the Brocket Reserve. Pauline will be sadly missed by her children, relatives and friends, especially at the Continuing Care Centre where she was residing at the time of her passing.
