1935 - 2016
Surrounded by loving family members, MAXINE EASTHOPE passed away on Monday, December 5th, 2016 at the age of 81.
Maxine Barbara Dixon was born July 23, 1935 in Penticton, B.C. and after spending her childhood years in B.C. and Manitoba she moved to Taber to take a life-guarding job at the local swimming pool. There she met another lifeguard by the name of Owen Easthope and they were married later, in 1954. Their marriage was sealed in the Cardston temple and they welcomed 7 babies in the course of 9 years. They resided and raised their family on a small acreage just outside of the city of Calgary and then upon Owen's retirement they moved to Canal Flats, B.C. After Owen's passing in 1999, Maxine made the decision to leave her beloved British Columbia and move to Cardston to be closer to family.
Maxine was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various Primary, Young Women and Relief Society callings. With Owen, she served two LDS missions - first, a church service mission in Western Canada and then later as senior full-time missionaries in Mexico.
For more than 35 years Maxine served as an outstanding Cub leader, positively influencing the lives of thousands of young boys as their adored "Akela". She also trained many adult scouters during her active participation in Scouting over the course of more than 50 years. She and Owen had created a specially-built camp at their acreage so that she could teach her family, these boys and leaders (and many others) all they needed to know about Scouting, camping and the outdoors. She received several senior level Scouts Canada awards for her outstanding service, including the Silver Acorn, Award for Fortitude and the Lifetime Achievement award.
Maxine played sports and loved music, making every effort to pass that love and knowledge on to all of her children. She absolutely loved her big family and adored her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. Maxine loved to do things for her large family and there are many fun memories of her famous piñatas, the obstacle courses and zip lines, and how she helped everyone learn how to swim, snowshoe, skidoo, water-ski, fish, drive a boat, etc. Of course, none of us will ever look at a green mint again and not think of her and her unending stash of those candies. Maxine was full of life, playful and there was never a dull moment when you were with her. She loved her children and always had a foster child or two in her home, hopeful of giving everyone she could a loving and caring home. Anyone who was in her home was always treated as a welcome guest and soon became a part of the family.
Maxine was an adventurer, and lived life to the fullest. She traveled the globe, earned her aircraft pilot's license when in her 60's, and as well earned her firearms and bow and arrow certification. She was a preparedness expert and loved to share her knowledge with everyone, even if it involved eating a meal worm or two as part of the lesson. This extraordinary woman impacted everyone she knew. She was hardworking, lively, colourful, generous, and never backed down from a challenge. Even in her last days, she kept her wonderful sense of humour, joking and teasing with her family, her doctors and the nursing staff.
Maxine's legacy is her family, and she is survived by her loving husband Dale Lowry, her sister Heather Beck (Thom Kennedy), as well as her children and their families, Linda (Brent) King, Karen Easthope, Glen (Vickey) Easthope, Deb Zemp, Mark (Kathryn) Easthope, John (Linda) Easthope, Shawna Easthope (Dale Block), 48 grandchildren, 82 great-grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband Owen, her parents Reginald Dixon and Edith Beck, her brother Barry Dixon and her grandson Steven King.
The family extends appreciation for the many acts of kindness and expressions of love received over the past couple of weeks.
Friends may meet the family on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at the Legacy Funeral Home in Cardston from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm or at the church from 8:45 to 9:45 am prior to the Service.
