In his retirement years his grandchildren would often find him shooting gophers in the fields on the quad or working in his garden. Wayne was an active participant in his community. He served as a town councilor in the village of Stirling and served on the Aetna Irrigation District. In his retirement years he volunteered his time to help with several political campaigns at the riding level. Wayne was a devout, and loyal believer in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
