Our dear mother, LORNA LaREE BROADBENT HATCH, of Cardston Alberta, Canada, peacefully passed from this life the day before Mother’s Day on May 7, 2022. Mother has joyfully reunited with our father, David after being apart for 55 years.
Lorna was born on November 23, 1928, in Cardston, Alberta, to William and Emma Broadbent. She was the 7th of 10 children and was raised in Leavitt, Alberta where she loved roaming the hills with family and friends. She attended school in Leavitt and was especially glad to meet David Hatch when she started attending school in Cardston. They were married January 9,1948 and brought 5 loving children to their home on the farm in Woolford, Alberta. She loved crocuses, buttercups and crane bells that we loved picking for her from the hills on our farm. She had a brain tumor when she was 24 years of age and the surgery left her partially paralyzed. Her children loved assisting her and being her little walking stick. She courageously carried on and was a wonderful homemaker, gardener, and nurturer. She helped us love nature, creativity and adventure. She would take us on picnics, berry picking and swimming in the river and to this day we are not sure she could have saved us in the water if necessary.
Mom and Dad moved our family to Riverside, California where new adventures and wonderful friendships were made. We then resettled in Cardston, Alberta to resume family life. She was widowed at a young age and left to finish raising her 5 children. She again faced this with courage and faith and never complained about her physical challenges or the task ahead of raising us on her own.
Mother served in many church callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is known for teaching the 3-year-olds for 26 years. She loved children and they loved her. Grandchildren and many neighborhood children who affectionately called her Aunt Lorna, loved baking with her, playing cards, and picking a toy from her toy drawer.
Mom could scare the hiccups out of anyone and would trick us every time with her April Fools jokes. She was formidable in Scrabble, and we still think she made up words. All were welcome in her home. She was a friend to everyone, especially those who needed a friend. Our family will always remember her when we see her beautiful, crocheted hangers or afghans in our homes. More than physical reminders will be the faith we all draw upon in our own lives. When faced with difficulties we have had a wonderful example in our mother and Grandmother of how to endure and still find joy.
She is predeceased by her loving husband David, parents William and Emma, brothers Delwyn (Melba), Charles (Viola), Keith and Bill, sisters Eda (Dahl Leavitt), Joyce (Lervae Cahoon), Fay (LaVont Marsden), Shirley (Weldon Sillito), son-in-law, Grant Nelson.
She is survived by her children: Connie (Grant Nelson, deceased), Dan (Doreen), Judi (Randy Sant), Phil, and Mike (Lois). She is also survived by her sister Thora (Allen Zemp), sister-in-law Doreen Broadbent, 17 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and 4 great great-grandchildren.
We would like to thank her friends and care givers at the Chinook Lodge and Lee Crest. For many years she also had wonderful care from Dr. Brian Low. Her children were privileged to care for her as well in her declining years. She never went a day without family being with her. We love you Mom and will miss our visits.
Friends may meet the family on Sunday, May 15th, at the Legacy Funeral Home in Cardston from 7:00 to 8:00 pm and on Monday from 10:00 to 10:45 am prior to the service. The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Temple Street Chapel, Cardston, AB., on Monday, May 16th, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in the Cardston Cemetery.
