LOLA LYNN (DODIE) HYGGEN-NELSON, 66, returned to her Heavenly Father on December 26, 2016. Dodie was born on September 22, 1950 in Cranbrook, B.C. and spent her childhood years in Jaffray B.C. She is the loving mother of Brad (Sandy) Hyggen, Blaine (Jennifer) Hyggen, Brandon (Marilyn) Hyggen, Braylon (Lisa) Hyggen, Lara (Steve – deceased) Hall, Blake (Jennifer) Hyggen and stepmother to Duane (Gaylene) Nelson, Troy Nelson – deceased and Ryan (Zita) Nelson.
Dodie was proceeded in death by her eternal companion, Larry Allan Hyggen. They were married in Jaffray, B.C. September 30, 1966 and were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Cardston, Alberta temple. They enjoyed 28 years of marriage and welcomed 6 children into the world prior to Larry’s passing in 1993. On May 23, 1998, Dodie married Jerry Nelson in Lethbridge, Alberta and her love extended to his two sons.
In addition to magnifying her call as a mother and homemaker, Dodie also worked clerical positions at the coal mine and Royal Bank in Sparwood, B.C. Dodie remained in British Columbia until 1996 when she moved to Southern Alberta. After moving she continued to raise her two youngest children, followed by working with her sister at Lethbridge Laser. Most recently she was employed at Lethbridge Family Services and Southern Alberta Society for the Handicapped; welcoming and providing full time care within her home for individuals with disabilities.
Dodie was a faithful and dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She had a strong testimony and never doubted the faith that she was taught as a young girl. She loved to study her scriptures and apply the teachings in her life. She served in her church in all auxiliaries including Stake callings, Primary, Adult Sunday school, Relief Society and in the Cardston temple. She was an extraordinary visiting teacher who never missed an opportunity to visit and care for her sisters.
Dodie enjoyed spending time and organizing family gatherings. Her door was always open and pantry always full. Her love of service extended to everyone. Members of her church and community benefitted from her countless acts of kindness. She was always delivering homemade soups and meals to friends and strangers. Some of Dodie’s favourite things to do were going to movies, dining out, and engaging in family history. However, her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She often preferred the company of little children and had the honour of being a granny for 27 years. Many who are not her biological grandchildren refer to her as Granny, as her love extended far beyond her own family. Everyone who met Dodie loved her. She had a contagious personality, a noticeable zest for life and always loved having a good laugh. Dodie’s positive outlook on life was evident in any trial she experienced.
With her husband and 8 children, Dodie is survived by her mother (Verna Barr), 5 sisters, 2 brothers and 25 grandchildren. She is pre-deceased by her father (Eddie Barr).
