Roland Tanner Jackson passed away Tuesday, 31 May, 2022 with his family gathered around, at the age of 90 years. He leaves to mourn his wife, Connie LaVerne (Archibald), two children, Donna Rae Tree (husband Alan Tree) and Roland Kenyon Jackson (wife Teresa Wynder), ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Roland was born 27 September, 1931 in Cardston, Alberta; the fourth of eight children born to Samuel Alonza and Iona (Tanner) Jackson. He also has six older half brothers and sisters. He was raised southwest of Hill Spring along the Waterton River on a farm his father bought in 1910 through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' colonization program of the Cochrane Ranch.
Roland started his schooling in Park Bend, a one-room school located in the corner of a field one mile south from the family's home. The teacher taught grades 1 through 9 with all the students in the same room. Roland finished grades 1 through 5 at Park Bend when the school was closed down and the students were then bussed to Hill Spring. Roland's dad drove the school bus which was their farm truck with a wooden box that slid in and out of the truck. In 1947 the family sold their farm and moved to Hill Spring where Roland finished his schooling and graduated.
While growing up on the farm, there were always many chores to do which taught him the value of work. However, he also remembered the fun times, like going with his dad and brothers fishing along the river, frying the fish over a bon fire, swimming in the river, etc.
Roland enjoyed participating in sports, particularly basketball. He played on the Hill Spring High School basketball team that was the Provincial Champion (twice), as well as on the M Men team that participated four times in the All-Church Tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah. He also played with the Cardston Maple Leafs in the commercial league for a couple of years.
In 1957 Roland met Connie LaVerne Archibald at a stake Gold and Green Ball in Cardston. They were married 18 June 1958 in the Cardston Alberta Temple. Their first home was in Hill Spring where their daughter, Donna Rae, was born 21 December, 1960, and their son, Roland Kenyon, was born 17 January, 1964. In 1967 the family moved to the Church Ranch southwest of Hill Spring as Roland had been hired by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. A year later the ranch was sold and Roland and Connie bought 400 acres one mile south of Cardston from Connie's father who was retiring. There they built their home where Roland and Connie raised their family and where they happily lived once their kids were grown being surrounded with family and friends.
Farming and ranching were always Roland's choice of occupation, but he worked many other jobs as well. He worked many years as a carpenter, was a custodian for the Church and was the assistant Manager of the U.G.G. grain elevator in Cardston, Alberta for 10 years.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has always been an important part of the family's life. Roland held many Church callings throughout the years, but the most memorable opportunity came in 1991 when he and Connie were called to serve in the Cardston Alberta Temple as ordinance workers, which they did for 30 years. This was such an enjoyable and rewarding blessing in their lives.
Roland was a wonderful husband, father, and friend to all those he was associated with. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. 'Till we meet again.
