Christian came into this world weighing 9 pounds 5 ounces. Christian spent his life in Tsuut’ina Nation, Kainai, Lethbridge and Calgary. In his infancy and toddler years, Christian resided in Tsuut’ina with his mom and his great uncle Paul Whitney and his great aunt Marilee Large-Whitney. His great aunt described him as bringing so much love into the home and he especially loved Barney. He was loved by his young aunts and uncle Tanisha, Cheyalla, and Hoyce. He would bounce in his crib excitedly whenever the door opened because he knew they were there to play.
As a toddler, Christian and his mom and dad moved to Lethbridge. Christian was described as a big baby boy for his age. Chris loved his food especially meat. He had a good appetite for a baby his age. On one of his earlier trips to Vancouver when he took his first plane ride, passengers commented on what a good baby he was because he didn’t cry on the plane ride at all. When he visited grandpa Roland and grandma Peggy, they described Christian as their sweet baby boy that followed grandma Peggy around the house and even mimicked what she said, he was echoing her. He was grandpa Roland's little ride along wherever he drove to. Christian was everyone's little guy in the Big Throat household; everyone tended to his needs. He was spoiled but came out a very good kid, never to throw a tantrum but already being a little helper. He was always surrounded by his Big Throat cousins which kept them an extremely close-knit family and they loved each other through bad and good times.
Christian moved to Calgary different times in his life. In his early years, Christian went to pre-kindergarten so he could have an early start in his education endeavors. He later attended Piitoayis School for Kindergarten, also in Calgary. Christian powwow danced in his younger years. He would practice with Wandering Spirit Dance Group. He would do performances at the University of Calgary for undergraduate classes. Of course, he knew he would get an honorarium and he would be shy but still go out there and dance. Christian’s dance style was grass; they would have to hold his hand to dance until he was able to be set free and dance hard. For Christian’s birthday, it was a whole month of celebration from Stampede, to Kainai powwow, to Tsuut’ina powwow. He loved camping at the powwows. As a little one he would ask his great aunty Marilee and great uncle Paul, “please please can I stay in the teepee?”
Christian joined a softball team in his elementary school years in Calgary, and won many awards. He was a very intelligent individual and excelled in his school work. Christian’s adolescent years started like every typical adolescent trying to find his way through life. This was about the time he started to attend ceremony more frequently, particularly sweats. After his first sweat he became hooked and we even would call him a sweat hog. He was constantly asking his great aunty Marilee to bring him to sweat in the mountains. He started to become a little Oskapewis (helper). He would sit there and assist the medicine man with whatever he needed in a respectful way, following protocols. Christian also attended Sundance ceremonies, and night lodges, including naming ceremonies. Christian was given a spirit name by the grandfathers during a night lodge that is translated to Holy Man. Christian was also baptized and had a strong Christian faith. He believed in Jesus and would assist (volunteer) in church camps in Little Chicago in Kainai.
During Christian’s lifetime he took a few trips to Vancouver, BC. During one of his trips Christian would grab the blanket from the car and say,“come on grandma – let’s go watch the sunset.” They would bring the bead work which he was great at, and wait for the sun to set. He spent days studying maps of Stanley Park and having one-on-one time with River exploring the environment on rented bikes. He would make sure to protect River, as he did with all his siblings and family. With him you knew you would be safe. Christian had a great love for nature, mother earth; he wanted to see the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and the Redwood Forest in California and so he did. He also traveled to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and numerous other cities along the way. He loved the water; the ocean has a healing spirit and so he also spent time at the Santa Monica Pier. Christian loved nature, our mother earth, so much that he would rather be in nature than go to Disneyland.
He stated to his grandmothers his career goal was to work in the medical field as a Paramedic or a Doctor. He attended two summers at the University of Calgary in a Science Program which taught the anatomy of the body, and diverse medicinal use with diseases. Christian had all the qualities to work in the medical field. He was caring, compassionate and had empathy for people. Christian would display these qualities when he would take care of his grandparents. He took care of his late grandpa Roland when he got sick by tending to his needs. With his grandmas Peggy and Claire, he would cook for them when they were not feeling good – can't forget those scrambled eggs with toast. Christian always would help the grandparents when walking. He would hold out his arm or hold their hand to support their walking. Christian would grab his Grandmother Claire’s dialysis bags when she was on home dialysis. He would get the machine ready and haul all the boxes up from downstairs without his grandmother asking. When Claire had to start hemodialysis, he would go to her treatments at the hospital with her. Years later, the nurses would ask about him as they knew he was a loving respectful boy. The treatment was their bonding time and they would watch TV together. They would buy junk food to eat together because it would be the only time grandma Claire could have certain foods.
Christian liked grocery shopping with his grandma Peggy. He would throw in food he liked but he would assist with carrying parcels in the house without being asked. He loved shopping for clothes which grandma Peggy just allowed him to get whatever he wanted.
Christian was a friendly, generous person, and made friends with young and old. He leaves a big void in the hearts of his mom, dad, siblings, grandmothers, aunties, uncles, cousins, extended family and everyone that may have come into contact with him. He will be dearly missed.
A Wake Service will be held at Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston on Wednesday, April 3 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm and continuing all night at Peggy Big Throat’s residence. The Funeral Service will be held at the Tanner Center, (260 - 1st St. West) Cardston, on Thursday, April 4 at 1:00 pm. Interment will take place in the Pioneer Cemetery, Levern, Blood Reserve.
