SUSAN SHELISE LEAVITT, wife of Gerald Leavitt, passed away at the age of 75 on April 15, 2021 at the Cardston Health Center’s Long Term Care Unit.
Susan was born on March 2, 1946 to Edgar (Ted) and Della Findlay Hinman in Pincher Creek, Alberta. She was the youngest of her three siblings: LaRene, Nolan and Neila. Susan married Gerald Leavitt on October 6, 1966, in the Cardston, Alberta temple. They have four daughters: Shannon Lybbert (Brent) of Cardston, Alberta, Tracy Bright (Dutchie) of Waxahachie, Texas, Sharleen Anderson (Jason) of Sherwood Park, Alberta, and Shelise Grigg (Jim) of Kuna, Idaho. She has fifteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Ted and Della Hinman, her sister, LaRene Steed Phillips and her brother, Nolan Hinman.
Susan loved to learn. After high school, she attended McTavish Business College in Edmonton and completed secretarial school with honors. A year later, she began working on a Business Education degree at the University of Alberta but put that on hold when she married and started a family. In 1978, she earned a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta, graduating with distinction. She would later obtain diplomas in both Special Education and Early Childhood Education from the University of Lethbridge.
Susan was a gifted and dedicated schoolteacher who was passionate about helping each student succeed. She taught Special Education at the Cardston Junior High School then took a position at the Cardston High School where she taught English Literature and Composition. After retiring, she and Gerald served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Benemerito, Mexico.
Whatever Susan did she gave it her all, be it teaching school, building or renovating houses with her husband, or serving in her Church. She was a compassionate and generous person who always took time to listen. She was a friend to the friendless and never failed to help those who stood in need.
A private family service will be held in her honor at the Legacy Funeral Home on Friday April 23. Interment to follow in the Cardston Cemetery.
