DELBERT “SONNY” MANY FINGERS
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dad, grandpa, son, brother, uncle, and nephew Delbert “Sonny” Many Fingers, on October 5, 2021, at his home, surrounded by his grandchildren, children, and family. Sonny fought a short battle with cancer. Sonny was born on October 9, 1957, to Clarence (late) and Mildred (nee Many Fingers) Melting Tallow. A brother to: Jeff, Andrew (Cindy), Barry, Lee Boy and his sister Debbie. Sonny was raised as a Kiipiitapoka by his maternal grandparents (late) Albert Sr. and (late) Margaret Many Fingers. And indeed, he was very spoiled by grandma especially. Auntie Sylvia cared for him also when mom was in the hospital and the two were very close as Sonny would often go home with auntie to help her with mending or painting fences, small reno work, mow, and being an all round handy man. Because Sonny and his sister were born 11 months apart – auntie Clara named him Sonny and his sister Honey. As children (his siblings and neighbor cousins) would play along the canal where we all learned to swim and skate. All the neighborhood cousins would ride horses for hours and because there was so many of us, Sonny would always get a saddle first (as they were limited) before all the others because uncle Albert would immediately saddle up a horse for him. The older ones got the other saddles, and the younger ones would have to ride bare back and took quite a few tumbles. He attended school at the St. Mary Residential, Lavern, Hillspring, Glenwood, and Cardston. He took various trades and was a laborer for many years and a facilitator for the Blood Tribe Social Development (BRTI). In 1983, he married his best friend (late) Tammy Creighton and was blest with three beautiful daughters: Stacey (John), Sonya (Brian), and Kyla. He was further blest with beautiful grandchildren: Tyrese, Shale, Keanu, Brayden, Mackenzie, Roan, Kya, Alex, and Ryker. Godson: Julian White Feathers and Aaron Albert Many Fingers. His nephew and nieces: Dallen, Kalesi, Brandon (Jolene), Shelby, Jay Cody, Daryl, Brandi, Julian, lil Kashtin, Aaron (Ashley), Marty, Bullit, Taylor (Jeff Bevans), and Tasha. Lots of great nephew and nieces, and many cousins. He was close to cousin Ivan and his wife Verna Many Fingers and often spent time with them. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends especially RJ Hairy Bull and Slim. And his childhood buddy Jimmy Chief Moon. Because of his friendliness, he had so many friends especially from the Lavern area.
He is also survived by his uncles: Herbert (late Mary Rose) and Burton (Virna) Many Fingers. Aunties: Clara (Mike) Sigurdur, Sylvia (late Punch) Tailfeathers, Roseanne (late Gordon Heavy Shields), Marie (Don) Shade and Freida Poirier from Spokane. Cousins consisting of Many Fingers, Melting Tallow’s (including Bill, Paul, Dave, Evanlene, Marie and their families from Spokane), Healy’s, Soops, to name a few. Predeceased by his sisters: Karen and Leanne; his brother Todd; maternal grandparents: Albert Sr. and Margaret Many Fingers and paternal grandparents: Paul and Jenny (Healy) Melting Tallow; great grandparents: Morris and Annie Many Fingers; Dick and Elizabeth Soop; and Louise Healy. Uncles: Albert Jr., Gordon (Loretta), Les Tallow and Evans Melting Tallow. Nephew: Kashtin. Also, many cousins, one being (late) Lyndsay Many Fingers that he grew up with and were the best of cousin Friends. His son in laws: Niven and Simon. His brother in law: Henry (Carol) Creighton, sister in law: Sharon; father and mother in law: Arthur and Mary White Quills. His cousins: Tweedy, Lyndsay, Kim (Sheldon), Lacey, Brielle, Stan, William, Ticky, Sharla, Charmaine, Kyle,, Rope,Twinks and Kurtsy. Our apologies if we missed anyone.
The wake service will be held on October 12, 2021, at the Tanner Senior’s Center, Cardston, from 6 – 10 p.m. The funeral mass will be held on October 13, 2021, at 11 a.m. at the St. Mary Immaculate Conception Church, Blood Reserve. (Due to covid restrictions, 50 people only). Interment to take place at the Pioneer Cemetery, Lavern.
