IRIS JEAN (PERRETT) MARSHALL, passed away in Cardston, Alberta on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at the age of 96 years.
Iris was born in Cardston, Alberta at the home of a midwife on May 31, 1923, the fifth child of six to Albert and Clara (Kiddle) Perrett. Until age seven she lived in Stirling, Alberta when the family moved to Mountain View. There she attended school, milked cows and, in summer, herded sheep east of Mountain View.
Iris loved the mountains and nature in general. She also developed an interest in music at an early age. She learned to play the piano by ear, never bothering to read music, but able to play almost anything that caught her interest.
Iris left her beloved mountain home to serve her country by joining the army during the Second World War. She remained in the services until the end of that conflict after which she worked for a machine manufacturer in Calgary as a stenographer. There she met and married Charles Marshall who worked in the same factory as a machinist. They had one child, Lahni Lee, while living in Calgary. The mountains kept calling Iris and she and Charlie bought a small ranch near Mountain View in 1958. There they had a second child, Charles Locke.
Iris is best known for her energetic walks on the roadways near Mountain View and for her rollicking piano playing style. She composed a song, Beautiful Mountains Blue, that is considered by some an unofficial anthem of the area and that has been used for various community and other events in the Cardston area.
Today she strides youthfully toward snow-capped mountains in search of spring’s first crocus.

The Funeral Service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mountain View, AB on Saturday, February 1st, at 11:00 a.m., with Bishop Curtis Leishman officiating.
Friends may meet the family at the Church from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the Service. Interment to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.
