Jessica Jane Morning Bird nee: Day Chief (Sakoisohpsskii - Last Mink Woman), was called home to the Creator on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the age of 31 years. Jessica was born on July 16th, 1992, at Rocky View Hospital, in Calgary, AB to Candace and Jon Bird. She will be sadly missed by her husband Gordon Morning Bird Jr. and her children: Jane, Ian, Alexi, Adam, and Baby Jr.
Jessica is also survived by her siblings: Brittany (Austin), Samantha (Alden), Deidre (Justice), Wacey, Kayla, Josie, Jonah, Jerome, Niasha, Bethany, Seth, Jon, and Satayana. Grandmothers: Bella, Diane, and Emma. Jessica was very close with all her relatives and friends.
Jessica grew up in Old Agency and Fort Whoop-Up, she had the honor of growing up with her great grandparents Ted and Annie Brave Rock and Jane Day Chief.
Growing up Jessica was known to be a tomboy hanging out with the boys, while her sisters played with dolls. During this time, she developed an interest in sports such as hockey where she started at pre-novice and continued her hockey journey as an amazing goalie. As the years went on, she played basketball at St. Francis Junior High from grade 7 to 8 and played basketball at Father Leonard Van Tighem in grade 9. During her young adult years, she developed an interest in slo-pitch where she played alongside with her mother Candace. She became an awesome slo-pitch player just like her mother.
Jessica excelled at so many things, such as when her cousin Fagan gave her no choice but to learn how to drive a standard. She got it on the first try. Jessica also enjoyed riding horses, especially during the Sundance, where she also took this time to spend with her family. Jessica cherished every family gathering that she attended.
Jessica met her best friend and love of her life, Gordon Jr., and spent many years together before they tied the knot on October 30th, 2021. They had a strong love and understanding relationship and shared the same humor. Jessica and Gordon have strong family values, it was always about their children. They put their children first before anyone and anything and made sure they were always taken care of. Jessica had a very special bond with her son Alexi’s adoptive parents Ana and Peter Velthuis
During her life, she worked at Belly River as a cashier, completed the Woods Manufacturing Program at BTEST, worked with Tyrell, John, and Orrin Day Chief with Chief Interiors, Human Resource Building and Health Department as a custodian, and the Great Canadian Liquor as a cashier. She also attended Red Crow College.
Jessica also transferred into the Brave Dog Society with her husband Gordon Jr. in the summer of 2023, where they share a rattle together. They were excited to join and continue their family traditions.
Jessica will be remembered for the love, caring, and sense of humor she shared with everyone she met.
Jessica was predeceased by numerous family members, Day Chief’s, Bird’s, Wolf Child’s, Brave Rock’s and Buckskin’s.

The Wake Service will be held at Old Agency Hall, Blood Reserve, AB on Sunday, December 10 from 6:00 – 11:00 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at Old Agency Hall on Monday, December 11 at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at One Spot Cemetery, Blood Reserve.
