It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and cousin Charlotte Russell, “Soh’kapini”, on Sunday, February 14, 2021, at the St. Michael’s Palliative Care centre at Lethbridge, Alberta, at the age of 77 years old.
Charlotte was born at the Blood Indian Hospital on September 17, 1943, to her parents Tom and Cecile (Wolf Plume) Russell. She is survived by her children Cheryl, Darryl (Martha), Joanne (Cameron), and Leslie. Her grandchildren Twylia (Troy), Kay-Lee, Sarah (Dee), Messier (Sara), Bullet, Tommy, and Joleen (Markus). Her great-grandchildren Kayden, Kimora, Whitney, Waysen, Kinsley, Kylee, Troyton, Tace, Taige, Ta-Char, Mackenzie, Tionne, Persauis, Kyson, Silas, Danilynn, Athena, Awbunnii, and Riviera. Her brother and sisters Oliver, Angela, Sylvia, and adopted brother Noel. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The families of Calf Robe, Small Eyes, Bull Shields, Many Guns, Healy, Crazy Boy, Davis, Wolf Plume, Eagle Child, Oka, and her relatives from both Browning and the Crow Agency in Montana. The family apologizes for any names we may have missed.
She was predeceased by her parents Tom and Cecile, brother James, daughter Cindy, nephew Robbie, sister-in-law Catherine, and sisters Jane Davis and Fannie Healy. Her Aunts Rosie Small Eyes, Jenny Eagle Child, Annie Crazy Boy, Jean Calf Robe, Katie Bull Shields, and Uncle Frank Wolf Plume.
Charlotte started her education from the St. Mary’s Residential School on the Blood Reserve. When she left the residential school, she met Clarence (Joey) Bird Rattler and began her family. It was during this time that she developed long lasting relationships with her brothers and sisters-in-law Joe, Evie, Merlin, Harold, Merle, June, and Eileen. Later in her life, she continued her education at the University of Calgary where she obtained her LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse). She was later employed by the Blood Indian Hospital for over 25 years as an LPN and was recognized for her years of service.
Charlotte was very athletic in her younger years playing basketball in her school years, and later was involved with the “Smokies” team playing both ladies softball and volleyball. After she completed her bible studies in Theology at the St. Joseph’s College in Edmonton, she went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, the Dead Sea, Egypt and climbed Mount Sinai in 1995. She enjoyed her trip very much and came back with stories of riding camels and the many sites she visited during her trip.
The family would like to thank Dr. Wong at the Lethbridge Dialysis Unit and the staff at St. Michael’s Palliative Care unit. We would like to acknowledge all her dear friends that are too numerous to mention. It is unfortunate that some have passed on already and will surely be there to greet her upon her arrival. We consider all her friends her honorary pallbearers.
The family viewing will take place on Friday, February 19, 2021, at the Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston, Alberta, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, February 20, also at the Legacy Funeral Home, with a pre-viewing from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. A burial service will follow at the Russell family plot. In lieu of feast, a bag lunch will be provided. Please follow Covid-19 mask and social distancing restrictions.
