DONALD GEORGE SHAW, passed away unexpectedly on December 21st, 2022, at the age of 87. Don lived in Cardston his entire life and enjoyed being close to the mountains and family. He was predeceased by his wife Afton on January 20th,2018. He married Karen Olsen on December 4th, 2020 and enjoyed his last 2 years with her.
Don was born to Robert M Shaw and Beryl Burt Shaw on May 14th 1935. He is a descendant of the early pioneers who arrived in Cardston in 1885. He married Afton Olsen in the Cardston Temple on April 21st, 1954. He is survived by 3 sons and 1 daughter. Rod (Joan), Wendell (Dorie) Darren (Marian) and Carol (James) McMurray all of Cardston. He has been blessed with 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. After high school he attended Calgary Business School and went on to operate his own business in Cardston providing many services to the community. He retired and spent 13 years managing Police Outpost park as part of a family operation. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -Day Saints and served in a variety of positions. He was active in the Rotary Club of Cardston and a past president. He can be remembered for the decades of involvement in the Cardston Parade and the countless hours of service in the community. Don’s life was centered around creating experiences for others whether it be his own family or extended family in Utah and Arizona. The memories he created along the way for so many speak volumes for his life. Don and Afton spent many winters in Arizona where they made new friends and enjoyed the warm winters. He enjoyed a good rodeo and spent many hours in the arena watching Darren and running the gates. He had a love of horses and spent many days in Waterton and Glacier on horseback with family and friends. Waterton and the family cabin provided life long memories for all those that had the opportunity to spend time with him there and “up the lake”. Don’s family have spent their summer vacations in Apgar in Glacier Park and the tradition continues. He made his last pack trip into Belly River Lakes at the age of 82 with his son, grandsons, cousin Alma, and great grandson Ryan. His last horseback rides were in Waterton this past summer. His love of the outdoors has been passed down 4 generations, and he will be fondly remembered for his example, dedication to family and friends, and his love of the Lord.
The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, December 27th, at 11:00 am at the Cardston Alberta West Stake Center (846 -1 Ave West), Cardston, AB. Friends may meet the family from 10:00 - 10:45 am. prior to the service. Interment to follow in the Leavitt Cemetery.
