Arthur Stanton Stephenson, 78, of Pincher Creek, passed away on April 20th, 2021, after struggling with illness over the past few years. Art died just one week before his 79th birthday.
Born in New Waterford, N.S., a coal mining town, Art was the sixth child of Fidelis ‘Dally’ and Florence (McKenzie) Stephenson. He leaves to mourn brothers, Michael, Fidelis, David and Pius, and sisters, Carmel Coffin, Brenda Stephenson, Bernadette Foley, all of Nova Scotia; brothers, Father Bill, Paul and Edward, all of Calgary; 23 nieces and nephews and extended family in Nova Scotia and Alberta.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Thomas, in childhood; Ronald, Calgary.
Art was educated at Xavier College, Sydney, N.S., and Notre Dame University, Nelson, B.C. Through his friendship with members of the Schmidt and Bonertz families, Art settled at Twin Butte and began his impressive 30 year career at the Shell Canada Waterton Gas Complex.
Art spent most of his adult life at Twin Butte and Pincher Creek, where he made many friends and acquaintances, and lived for many years with the family of Gael and Maureen Bonertz, and their children Tracy, Carrie and Shane, with whom he developed deep lifetime bonds. He enjoyed the farming and ranching life in the Foothills of Alberta. During his illness, he created - with help from his friends - a booklet about his life titled “A Cape Breton Cowboy.”
In his early years, Art was very active in sports, especially Little League baseball, and High School and recreational hockey. He was also an accomplished golfer, and a member for many years of Waterton Park Golf Course. He was an avid fan of all sports, especially hockey, golf and baseball. He also loved spending time in his garden… Art was a loyal, generous and kind man. He was blessed with a quick wit and enjoyed a good laugh.
Art's family is very grateful to the late Gael Bonertz, and his wife Maureen, for providing Art with a home and loving ‘family’ that was very near and dear to his heart. Special thanks are extended to the Bonertz children, especially Carrie and her husband, Rod Bust, for their devoted care and close friendship for many years, and especially for the love, patience and assistance they provided as his illness progressed in the past few years.
The Stephenson family, and Carrie and Rod, would like to express our deep appreciation to everyone who took the time to assist Art during his long struggle with Parkinson’s. A very special "thank you" to the staff at Lee Crest and Good Samaritan's, the Cardston and Pincher Creek home care teams and his physicians, Dr. Tracy Burton and Dr. Justin Low. Your dedication and caring for Art was beyond; we cannot thank you enough for the care and love you gave him. To all who helped in any way, our sincere thanks.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are welcome to the Parkinson Association of Alberta (https://parkinsonassociation.ca/).
Due to pandemic restrictions, a private Funeral Mass will occur April 30th at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Pincher Creek. Art's burial will take place at St. Agnes Cemetery, New Waterford, N.S. at a later date.
