VALORIE (VAL) JOAN HAYCOCK STRINGHAM, beloved wife of Bryant Stringham, passed away on July 10th, 2018 in Cardston, Alberta at the age of 83 years from metastatic bowel cancer. Val was born on November 11th, 1934 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the only daughter of Myrtle and Bernard Haycock (both deceased). She was married for 21 years to Claude Armstrong, with whom she had five children: Darien Jo Armstrong (deceased Dec. 2016), Patti Sue (Alan) Paran of Edmonton, AB; John Grainger (Julie) Armstrong of Marlboro, AB; Melinda Rose (Evan) Larsen of West Jordan, UT; and Richard Bruce (Andrea) Armstrong of Edmonton, AB. In addition to her four living children, their spouses, and her husband, she leaves to mourn ten living grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Upon graduation from high school in Winnipeg, she attended and graduated from a secretarial college. She worked in a variety of secretarial positions, including data entry for Imperial Oil in Edmonton and as secretary for the LDS Institute Director in Edmonton. Later in life she achieved success at Grant McEwan Community College where she led her classmates and received a certificate in Design Arts, complementing the artistic talents she had always possessed. Health issues prevented her from pursuing this career so she worked with the Sage Institute in Edmonton and Provo, UT for nine years. In this position she interviewed project participants, assembled data bases, wrote and edited final reports, thereby develping the talents she later used in writing a novel. Val fulfilled a mission for the LDS Church in Puyallup, Washington from 1993 to 1994. Upon her return, she moved to Winnipeg to care for her ailing mother until her mother’s death in 2000. She then retired to Cardston so she could be near the temple. While in Cardston, she served in various callings in the LDS Church, which she has consistently done since she became a member in 1955. Service as an Ordinance Worker in both the Regina and Cardston temples was a favorite activity. On November 12th, 2013 she married Bryant Stringham, and they have resided in Cardston since that time. Val has been involved in many community activities. She has been a member of the Cardston & District Seniors Society and participated in many of their events. She has given active support to local political causes and donated time and means to many worthwhile programs.
Val and family express their thanks for the service and care she has received throughout her illness. It is her wish that those who would like to offer something in remembrance of her life, do so by contributing to the Humanitarian Aid program of the LDS Church. A motto she tried to live by: Believe. Achieve. Receive.
