On June 13, 2023, Dakota Maiers, beloved son of his parents, the late David Alan Maiers and Beverly Tailfeathers-Maiers, crossed over the medicine line and joined Creator's world at 36 years of age. Born on June 3, 1987, this young man was suddenly taken from his family due, in part, to a medical heart condition which happened in Lethbridge, Alberta.
He is survived by his loving Mother, Bev and his precious sisters Sheri Bader and Dana Lane-Tailfeathers. Dakota's only brother, who he loved in his own way, is Tuffy Taifeathers-Maiers from Calgary, Alberta. All are tribal members of the Kainai First Nations and who reside in and around the Cardston, Fort Macleod and Lethbridge areas. Dakota's greatest purpose in life was learning the gift of love. He willingly doted on his niece Tori and her new baby; his nephews, Colt, Dogger and Ryder. Dakota's great nieces and nephews are Kalani, Legend, Dixon Rain; and numerous others. His step sisters and brothers are Sonya Chief Moon, Brenda and Jason Crane Chief. Dakota's step relatives are Cadence, Cobin and Lily. Another adoptive relative who predeceased him was Takala Bad Arm.
Dakota came into this world with rust orange hair and we couldn’t even see his eye brows or eye lashes as they were too fair. It took four days of labor before he was born. He was a very easy child to raise, but then came the teenage years. His big brother Tuffy was seventeen months older which made double trouble for us. They were like twins and were very close and very active. The two spent more time at the barn and corral with their Colts and riding horses. His passion of horses carried on into adult hood. Dakota and Tuffy spent a lot of time with their dad, fishing, camping, and of course, hunting. Dakota had a beautiful personality and made friends so easily. He was full of fun and jokes. He could walk into a room full of strangers and have everyone laughing. Tuffy and Dakota would often get up early pack their lunch and water, saddle up, and head to the hills. We didn’t worry because Tuffy was so responsible and they would return safely. They would always end their rides at our cemetery, which seemed to be their favourite spot, and also a short distance from our place. Dakota often went on his midnight rides after everyone had gone to sleep. Those rides must’ve been pretty important as he was really scared of the dark. Of course, he never left his dog at home. One of his passions was fire fighting and he couldn’t wait for summer to come. He loved the job, and of course he made many friends at all the different sites. Dakota’s biggest dream came true when he and Beth Wells had their son Ryder Alan Tailfeathers - Maiers. They were so proud and happy. Ryder ended up looking just like him, “a carbon copy of Dakota.” Father and son loved each other so much. Ryder is now 14 years of age and going through his greatest loss. Dakota loved all kids, but especially his nieces and nephews. Colt, the oldest nephew, went on to be best friends with Dakota. His niece Tori continued being so special to him. Next Kehlani and Legend who were Colt’s kids had a chance to experience Dakota’s love and attention. Tori’s, baby Jalaya Dixon Raine already was the sweetest, cutest little niece whom Dakota fell in love with. Cadence and Lily were lucky to have loved their uncle. Brenda a sister, was the mother of these kids. Jason and her brother grew really close to Dakota as well. Tuffy and Dakota were a big part of Sonya’s life as they lived with her periodically. Dakota later learned how to bead and gifted all his nieces and nephews with his work. He had dreams of his nephew Dagger, continuing with his singing and dancing and entertaining people. Dagger was not afraid of being in the limelight, and was very friendly. Dakota’s biggest disappointment was that he did not pursue his favourite sport activity – football. He was scouted by the Calgary Colts, but just wasn’t ready to move away from home. He did remain friends with many of his football buddies. Dakota was close to all of his relatives. He will definitely be missed by everyone who knew him.
A Wake Service will be held at Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at St Paul’s Anglican Church, Blood Reserve on Thursday, July 27, 2023 at 12:00 pm. Interment to take place at St. Paul’s Cemetery.
