LeVAUN MATKIN THOMPSON, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away quickly and peacefully on February 12, 2017 at age 92. Born in Magrath, Alberta on June 15, 1924 she lived most of her life in the area. She attended Magrath High School where she met, but did not yet date, her future husband of 67 years, John MacKenzie Thompson. On May 8, 1945 (V-E Day), she departed on an 18-month mission for the LDS church to southern Ontario, a very noteworthy undertaking for a 21 year old female in those days. Upon her return from the mission field, she worked as a teller for the Bank of Montreal in their Magrath branch. It was then Johnny began to court her. They were married on October 5th, 1949 from her parents’ home in Magrath. For many years she was the ideal farmer’s wife on the Thompson homestead in Spring Coulee, where she and Johnny raised three children, Christine Ruth, Duncan Charles and Mary Ellen.
LeVaun was very active in the church and served many roles, including President of the Relief Society. She believed in giving of her time and talents to the community, especially fund-raising efforts for the Magrath-Cardston Marching Band. Her turkey pies were very popular across southern Alberta and people continued to request them even years after she discontinued that project. She was active in politics, serving as Secretary to the Alberta PC Party. She had a wide and varied circle of long-time friends for whom she was happy to “go the extra mile” when needed.
From 1975 until 1986, LeVaun travelled to Edmonton with Johnny, while he served as the MLA for Cardston Constituency. There she was particularly appreciated for hosting dinners for other MLAs whose wives remained at home. After 1986, LeVaun served on the boards of Alberta Terminals Limited and the University of Lethbridge. Her greatest joys were her family, friends and the LDS church.
LeVaun’s funeral and memorial service will be held in the Spring Coulee LDS church on Saturday, February 18th. Viewing will be in the Primary Room from 10:00 to 10:45AM with the chapel service beginning at 11AM. LeVaun will be interred in the Spring Coulee Cemetery next to Johnny. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her name to a church or your favourite charity.
