As soon as he could walk, he learned to skate on the pond behind our house. He eventually played with the Golden Chiefs and with the Kimberly Dynamites. He also loved playing football, with the St Mary’s Warrior’s and most of all, steer riding at J & L Stables in Cardston. He even had a shot at competing at the Calgary Stampede but due to the current political climate was unable to do so.
In his sons’ early days growing up on the ranch, Delray would show Shamus and Guy how to saddle up a horse properly, how to herd cattle, how to take care of the ranch, and regulate the property while riding on the homegrown Wadsworth Paints. He learned to ride, as we all did on our pony, Mr. Ed. He also trained Dave and Shirly Healy’s racehorses. Dave and Shirly adored Delray and took him as one of their own. He worked with Lethbridge Basements for a number of years. Delray enjoyed cooking for family and friends, especially hosting many barbecues. He enjoyed going to watch Indian Relay races when they would come to one of his favorite watering holes (Bully’s), as well as watching hockey and football. Delray had many friends from all walks of life; Delray had respect and empathy for everyone.
Delray graduated High School from St Mary’s and went on the further his education at Red Crow College, Mount Royal College, then the University of Lethbridge where he obtained a B. A . and a B.Mgt degrees. Due to health issues, Delray spent the last few years enjoying life.
He was a cowboy to the end. “I am not afraid.”
