Joanne A (Salmon) Anderson passed away peacefully on March 17, 2024 in Cardston, Alberta. She was predeceased by her husband, Rex H Anderson, her parents Robert and Mabel Salmon, and her sisters-in-law Marilyn Salmon and Karen Salmon. She is survived by her five children, Kevin (Michell) Anderson, Sandra (Jeff) Smith, Colin Anderson, Darcy (Laura) Anderson, and Jody (Stephen) Poettcker; her six siblings Cal Salmon, Max (Barb) Salmon, Pat (Burton) Shields, Ralph (Judy) Salmon, Melvin (Jean) Salmon, and Barry (Carol) Salmon. She also leaves behind her 19 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Joanne was born in Raymond, Alberta on October 11, 1937. Her childhood was spent in a few different areas as her parents moved the family for different jobs. Eventually she ended up back in Raymond where she grew into her teens and graduated from high school. She often spoke fondly of her time in Raymond and remained friends with quite a few girls from her graduating class, going out for annual dinners together. Following high school, Joanne worked for and received a teaching certificate. Excited to try out her new skills, she moved to Whitecourt, Alberta and taught in a one room schoolhouse in the great white north. Joanne then was blessed to be able to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Eastern States mission, headquartered in New York. She had many wonderful experiences while teaching the gospel in the east, mostly serving in Upstate New York. Returning home after her mission, Joanne taught school in Lethbridge. It was while she was living in Lethbridge that she was introduced to Rex Anderson through a mutual friend. They continued to date and were married on August 21, 1963. Joanne continued to teach while Rex finished his education and eventually they moved to Barnwell, where they lived and raised their five children.
Joanne was a very talented cook and baker. There were always baked treats around the home, more than we could possibly eat. She loved sharing her food with neighbors and was quick to make sure to attend to people in need. Joanne loved to get up at the crack of dawn and felt like it was a waste of a day if her list wasn’t done by 9am! Joanne and Rex were both a force of nature when tending their garden and she always made sure to share the excess produce with friends and neighbors. Joanne was an avid reader and usually had a book in her purse wherever she would go. She had a quick mind and in her older years became quite conversant in politics and current events. Joanne loved to sew and took a few classes over the years. She was able to sew most of her kid’s clothes including jeans and then moved on to doing quilts and things for the grandkids. Joanne was a very devoted member of her ward and community. She served in many different callings in church and spent years on the PTA and various committees at school. She loved her family and was a devoted mother. She will be missed by all who knew her.
We would like to thank Dr Low and Dr Walters and all the staff at Cardston Hospital and the home health staff who took care of mom.
