BERYL SABEY BECTELL
OCT 1,1920 TO NOV 25, 2020
Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother has passed away. She was 100 years young. She had three great passions in life; her family, her faith, and her zest for teaching. She left us to join her husband Foster, her parents Lloyd and Theta Sabey, her siblings Blair, Udine, Darlene, Gordon and LeRon, her brothers-in-law Phil and Lawrence, her sister-in-law Eleanor, and her youngest daughter, Mary, in eternal life. She is survived by her daughters Colleen, and Debora Jeanne along with her sons-in-law Michael and Myron, her sister-in-law Margaret Sabey, 19 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandson. She was a dedicated matriarch enjoying any occasion that brought her family and good food together.
Beryl was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings with steadfast faith and joy. After receiving her Teaching Certificate from Normal School in Calgary, she taught in Welling, Spring Coulee, Carway and Cardston, known to her students as “Mrs. Bectell”. She was heard to say many times that, “she was truly blessed to do something that she really loved”. As a teacher and as the librarian of the Cardston Elementary School, there was never a day that she did not want to go teach all the young minds in her classes. One of her greatest educational achievements was the completion of her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Lethbridge at the age of 57.
Beryl retired in 1981 to spend more time with Foster, to help with the care of her aging parents and to do genealogy work. “Grandma Great” also continued to give the love of learning and reading to her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She overcame several challenges of health to reach her 100th birthday and she was a loving, sweet lady until her passing. We love you Mom and you will be forever in our hearts.
We wish to offer our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the loving and kind care provided to our sweet Mother for the past 6 ½ years by the wonderful caregivers and staff of the Lee Crest.
Due to the lastest Covid 19 restrictions, there will be a small family service on Friday, Nov 27th at 2 p.m. with a family celebration at a later date when once again we are allowed to gather with all of our loved ones. Beryl will be laid to rest beside her dear husband, Foster, in the Cardston Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider giving to the reading programs at the Cardston Library.
