Joyce Lou Ann Behrens 1934-2019
Born in River Falls Wisconsin to Willie and Irene Christenson
She is the youngest sibling to four older brothers: Harold, Dale, Clayton and Bill. She married Don Behrens in 1955 and raised six children. She is predeceased by her husband and is survived by her children and grandchildren: Fred (wife Louisa, daughter Stephanie, son Caleb), Jodi (husband Jim, daughters Tess and Emma), Frank (wife Jackquie, son Daniel and daughter Shayla), Janice (husband Bill, daughter Jessie), Terry (daughters Mahogany and Maggie), Traci (husband Bob, sons Derek and Dylan, daughter Tahnee).
Joyce was a farm girl, a practical, talented, “hands-on” person. Amongst her many skills, she was a prolific seamstress, knitter and gardener. She loved football, basketball, hockey and curling, as well as all the sports her children and grandchildren participated in, such as barrel racing, fencing, volleyball, rugby, taekwondo, and soccer.
She and her family lived and travelled throughout the US and Canada. Her favourite place to live was on the Blood Reserve at St. Mary’s (Kainai) where she was an integral member of the community, and her husband was a teacher.
Don and Joyce kept busy in their retirement years, involved in many Cardston Senior Centre activities such as plays and concerts. They participated a variety of other activities within the community, including playing cards at the Legion Hall, and even staying active with a paper route. When they weren’t out and about in the town, they frequently travelled to visit family and friends.
Joyce had a deep love and respect for the miracles of nature around her. Family was her priority. She operated “Grandma’s Taxi Service,” always willing to pitch in and make sure her grandkids arrived where they needed to be safe ad sound. She lived in good health due to what Dr. Lowe called her “strong Norwegian blood.”
Joyce lost her battle with Alzheimer’s disease surrounded by the love of her family on January 22, 2019 4:05 pm.
We would like to thank all of the staff who cared for Joyce through her journey, especially to the staff at Lee Crest who helped her in her transition period and kept her free from pain. Honourable mention to Chynna, who held Joyce close to her heart and was a great support to Traci, who was always there by mom’s side along the way.
The Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 26th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church (389 - 2nd Ave. W.) in Cardston, AB. We wish to thank the doctors, nursing staff and all who cared for Joyce throughout her journey. Condolences may be sent by CLICKING HERE.
