We the children and family of LOUISE BIG SORREL HORSE, born June 21st, 1954, are very sad to announce her death on May 27th, 2020 at the age of 65 years, surrounded by her children at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital. Louise was born to the late Wallace Scout and Frankina Big Sorrel Horse. She resided on the Blood Reserve where she was born and raised as a young girl. At the age of 5 she attended the St. Mary’s residential school for 7 years then attended Bow Island school. She also received a certificate for Life Skills. Louise met her soul mate Paul Bear Shin Bone Jr. in 1969 with whom she had 2 boys and 4 girls. In their early years of marriage, Louise and Paul moved to Yakima, Washington in the 1970’s. Paul worked there to provide for his growing young family and after a few years they moved back to the Blood Reserve. During the years between 1970-1973, Louise and Paul lived with Jack Sarcee, living a traditional life, and helping him care for 300 head of horses. Jack took Louise and Paul Jr. as his own children, ensuring they learned and lived the history of our people and culture. Louise worked in Alberta, B.C. and also the U.S.A. She worked as a seamstress labourer, housekeeper, custodian, and caregiver. Louise had many talents and hobbies such as native crafts, homemaking, and she also played sports as a young girl such as basketball, baseball, and horseback riding with her special man, Paul. Louise was very proud of her children and spouse, who were all involved in native dancing. She spent many hours, with her husband making sure that their outfits were ready for the next pow-wow. The family travelled to many places in Canada and the U.S. to follow the pow-wow trail in the summer. Louise loved and cherished her growing family. She loved to cook for them and would have family gatherings often. Louise raised her 6 children, and adopted her nieces. Her children include Charlene (Dion), Ruben (Missy), Saul (Jolene), and Amanda; adopted daughters, Tracey (Barkley), Tamara (Junior), Pam Bear Shin Bone.
A Wake Service will be held at the Louise Big Sorrel Horse residence, Blood Reserve on Friday, June 5th at 7:00 p.m continuing all night. The Funeral Service will continue at the Big Sorrel Horse residence beginning at 12:00 pm on Saturday, June 6th. Interment in the Blood Band Cemetery.
