Stanley was born at the Blood Indian Hospital on the Blood Reserve. He was raised in the Fish Creek and Lavern area. Later, in his late teens, his family moved to Standoff Townsite. Then, after he go married, he built a house on his family’s homestead at Scout’s Coulee.
In Blackfoot tradition, a young man may have more than one traditional name. His childhood names included Manikapii (Bachelor). Matso’wa (Handsome or Outstanding Young Man) was another name given to him by one of the loving grandfathers from Fish Creek: Earl Willows.
In his younger years, Stanley, along with his sisters, Tiny (aka Sherry), Vicky and Ivy spent a lot of time at Earl and Alice Willows’ residence. They loved helping out and would help get water from the river and wood for heat. Often times, they would ride the bus straight from school without their mom’s permission. But, back then, it wasn’t a big deal, because their parents knew they would be looked after.
In his teenage years, Stan would help out at his uncle, Melvin Wadsworth’s ranch. He would cut hay, mend fences, ride horses and round up the cattle for the annual branding event. He would also go hunting for anything that could be put on the table including deer, elk and moose. He also was instrumental in organizing the first 4H Club on the reserve. And, helped pave the way for future therapeutic riding programs. Stan was truly one of the last “real cowboys”.
His baby daughter, Shayla, has fond memories of when he would take her to riding club. He taught her how to saddle up and ride horses. He always reminded her to “never be scared when you ride a horse!”
Stan was a hard worker and provider for his family. He and his late wife, Brenda, also opened up their home for numerous children who needed temporary homes while they were in Child Protection.
Stan was a talented actor and stuntman and was cast in the following movies: Dream Keeper, Into the West and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. He was very proud of his accomplishments and always attributed his success to his mother, Beatrice.
For the past 15 years, Stan was employed at Red Crow Community College in the Operations and Maintenance Department. As the head of O & M, he oversaw the clean-up of the 2015 devastating fire of the original site of Red Crow Community College. Nevertheless, you can imagine his elation, when the doors were opened at the new college site in Standoff. Stan took pride in his work at Red Crow College.
Stan was the favorite nephew of his late God-Mother, Gloria (Scout) Red Crow. In Glor’s eyes, Stanley Joseph could do no wrong!
Stan had many close friends and relatives who will dearly miss his warm, bright smile that he greeted everyone with. However, the family are comforted knowing that he is now reunited with is wife, Brenda; his son, Shawn; his granddaughter, Maggie; his parents, Gilbert and Beatrice; his baby brother, Gilbert Jr; his grandparents and many more relatives and friends on the other side.
Stan comes from large families within the Mamiioyiiks (the Fish Eater Clan) and Mo’toisspitaiks (All Tall Peoples Clan). His relatives include, but are not limited to the following families: Big Sorrel Horse, Scout, Spear Chief, Rider, Big Head, Yellow Feet, Cold Weather, Davis, Striped Wolf, Bare Shin Bone, Creighton, Many Chief, Black Water, Wadsworth, Willows, Plaited Hair, and many more.
