DORIS BIRD was born February 9, 1954. She was suddenly called home to join her family in heaven on July 15, 2025.
She is survived by her loving daughter Cheryl, Dylan, Gemini (Grace), Alexis; great grandchildren, Kyree and most of all her baby Brixton whom she spent the most time with, as well as her brothers Gary (Joyce) Bird, Wilfred Bird, Henry (Rosemarie) Bird; her sisters, Jessie Calftail, Doreen Bird and Maureen Bird.
She attended St. Paul’s residential school then later on she went to St. Mary’s residential school and finished at Cardston High School. She was proud to graduate from grade 12,. She was proud of this accomplishment because she was the only one from her family to achieve this goal. She went on to pursue her education in the city of Calgary at Mount Royal College in the Social Work program. She put her education on hold to dedicate her life to love and care for her parents Bill and Annie Bird - this was one of her greatest accomplishments.
Doris was raised in the Full Gospel church and was very active in the religion. She and her oldest brother Winston had formed a choir between the 70’s and 80’s and performed and attended many camp meetings and revivals across Alberta and Canada as well as numerous places in the United States.
She was also a hard worker trying to provide for her daughters. She worked at the clinic next to the Indian Hospital as a secretary. She also worked at the Potato farm on the north end of the reserve and on the railway pulling railroad ties, as well as at the Cardston Hospital as a custodian and many hotel and motels in Waterton, AB.
She later went on to further her education at the Lethbridge College in the Culinary Arts program. In the 80’s she picked apples in Yakima.
She later went on to love and care for her grandchildren Kyree and especially her pride and Joy Brixton whom she spent the most time with.
She is predeceased by her daughter Brenda Bird; her grandchildren, Travis and Jasmine Bird; grand parents George Calling Last Sr. and Katie Big Wolf; George and Emma First Rider, Frank and Edith Badman, John Small Eyes (Fanny Calling Last), Lucy Gambler, George and Maud Calling Last, Uncle George Small Eyes; brothers Winston Bird, Rex Bird; sisters, Beaulah, Freda, and Francis Bird; nephews, Thomas Oka, Billy Joe Bird, Sheldon and Virgil Bird and Matthew Cutter; her nieces, Donna and Annie Bird and Crystal Mills.
Doris also has an adopted family, the American Horse family from Cannon Ball North Dakota, and adopted son and daughter, Norman Black Plume and Stacy White Man Left.
A Wake Service will be held at Moses Lake Community Hall, Blood Reserve on Wednesday, July 30 from 6:00 – 11:00 pm and continuing all night at Doris’s residence. The Funeral Service will be held at Moses Lake Community Hall on Thursday, July 31 at 12:00 pm. The interment will follow in Blood Band Cemetery, Blood Reserve, AB.
