“Sikimiota’si” (Black Horse Rider)
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Kelvin Melvin (Buckskin) Black Horse on Tuesday November 23, 2021 at the age of 60 years old. Kelvin was born on April 29, 1961 at the Blood Indian Hospital in Cardston Alberta.
Kelvin attended Cardston Elementary School, the Junior High School and High School . From there he worked as a carpenter helping his grandpa Reggie building houses, bridges, etc. He was skilled in various areas such as carpentry, mechanics, horse rancher, mining, musician and other trades. He took interest in old vehicles and would often restore them. He was well known for his interest in these vehicles; they can be seen parking at his home. Kelvin had many interests throughout his life but he was most proud of becoming a Pastor. He sought this new found passion of faith by obtaining his Clergy with vital statistics of Canada; a huge accomplishment in his adult life. As a child, Kelvin was drawn into the Christian-Full Gospel faith by his grandparents; Reggie and Gladys Buckskin. He also founded “Black Horse Mining”; searching for ammonite was something that he quite enjoyed.
In 1998 Kelvin legally married the love of his life; Violet Heavy Runner. They raised 4 children together and shared many precious memories. Kelvin was well known for making sure his wife and children had everything. They shared a special bond as husband and wife. Kelvin had a big heart and took in other children as his own. This was an attribute that he took on from his grandmother Gladys and mother Freda. As a child Kelvin was known as “Pookiitapi” Little Person; a name given to him by his great, great grandmother, because of how small he was as a child.
As an adult, Kelvin took interest in the Rodeo circuit and started team roping with his best friend Clement Black Water. Team Ropers referred to him as the “Lion”, originally Lion known by Leo Camarillo in the Rodeo world. He attended a team roping school, during the last day he was teamed up with Sam Bird. Their performance caught the eye of Larry Bird who was a spectator, Kelvin double hocked a steer and caught Sam Bird by surprise and Sam almost fell off his horse during this particular ride. This performance was the highlight of that evening. Kelvin and Clement won the Sandhills rodeo in 2013, team roping first place; they were both very proud of this accomplishment. Kelvin travelled the rodeo circuit with friends, it was one of his fondest memories, White Swan-Washington, Crow Agency, Browning Montana to name a few. He enjoyed the lifestyle of team roping and travelling the rodeo circuit. He was very proud of his team’s performance at the Crow Agency Rodeo, Kelvin & Clement took first for Team Roping at this rodeo as well. He made many friends in this world and mentored those that crossed his path; Lane Little Bear was one that he favored as he would refer to him as the “Champ”. Kelvin and Clement where lifelong friends that shared many memories together; he will be dearly missed by Clement.
Kelvin was employed with Public Works for the past 30 years, having titles such as road maintenance and foreman. He crossed paths with many people during this time and made huge impacts on them because of his kind nature.
Kelvin had a gentle soul; he took time to listen and comfort those that crossed his path. He would often minister, council and guide family friends with the Word of God. He truly walked with God as he was very patient, loving and understanding.
