It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Mary Colleen Black Plume, at her residence in Lethbridge, Alberta on July 3, 2024. Mary Colleen was born on December 5, 1963 at the Blood Indian Hospital in Cardston, Alberta.
Colleen was raised by her parents, the late Jim and Geraldine Black Plume, and was brought up in the Blackfoot Traditional way of life and religion. During the time of her passing, Colleen also appeared at church on Sundays with the Streets Alive Mission in Lethbridge, Alberta.
Colleen, who was often referred as: Mom, Gramma, Aunty Mary, Pookaataan’, and Mary 4 Corners (Medicine Woman) by the many family and friends whom she loved. Colleen had a very kind, generous and humble heart. She possessed such an affectionate positive loving energy. She was often seen sharing funny, wild and crazy stories with whoever she crossed paths with. Her laughter/ humor were infectious. Her smile and laugh could light up any atmosphere. Strength and Resiliency were also among her strongest attributes in life. She will be forever remembered for her strong work ethic.
Colleen’s beautiful life was devoted to her children, grandkids, family, loving friends and community. She was always so proud of her children and grandkids. She loved to see everyone happy, healthy and successful. Being a mother came natural to her. Aside from family, she also had so many grateful individuals who called her Mom or Grandma. These past few years, Colleen had developed a special bond with her adopted families, the Heavy Shields and Russells. (She was always there to lend a helping hand at Sundance.) Colleen always carried Compassion for anyone who needed a hug or laugh. She lived very down to earth and was spiritually gifted.
Colleen’s interests and hobbies included her love of Rock picking (Ammonite), cooking, listening to music and story telling. During her youth she attended various Pow-wows as a Fancy Dancer. Her sister Shirley recalls her placing many times and winning in Crow Agency one year. She played sports and was a bat catcher. Keeping up the Black Plume family tradition as a catcher.
Besides being a devoted mother, she was employed as a cook and housekeeper throughout her adulthood. However, she was more notably known for being paid to clean people’s homes. She often received admiration and countless referrals from her love of cleaning on/off the reserve. She had a passion for cleaning, it was her therapy.
