Sophia ‘Marie’ Black Plume was born on December 24, 1982, in Cardston, Alberta to her parent(s): Noreen Black Plume and the late Michael (Mink) Day Rider. Sophia was called home to Creator on February 1, 2022, at the age of 39 in Lethbridge AB. Sophia is survived by her children: Teagan ‘Sanjay’ Iron Shirt, Daniel ‘Anthony’ Black Plume and Malachi ‘Maximus’ Black Plume. Sophia is survived by her siblings: Thelma ‘Jean’ (Chris) Messinger, Tania Black Plume. Maranda (David) Mcleod Saunders, Maria (Martyn) Bracko and Lizzie ‘Natasha’ Across the Mountain. Sophia’s maternal aunties and uncles are Gloria Big Sorrel Horse (Randy), Ramona Black Plume, Trina Black Plume and Alden Black Plume. Sophia’s paternal aunties and uncles are Cindy, Janice and Wil Day Rider. Lorraine (Harrison) Chief Moon. Roger and Gus Jr (Anne) Chief Moon. Sophia is survived by her Paternal grandfather Edward (Elaine) Chief Moon. Maternal great aunt’s: Mary Ann (Les) Across the Mountain & Margaret (Ron) Across the Mountain. Maternal great uncle, Martin (Elizabeth) Vielle, great uncle Donald Big Swallow.
Predeceased by her maternal grandparents: Virginia Big Sorrel Horse and Alfred Across the Mountain. Great grandparents Joe and Lizzie Across the Mountain. Predeceased by her paternal grandparents: Delma Chief Moon, Agnes Day Rider. Predeceased by her paternal aunties and uncles: Brain and Joyce Day Rider and Gus Chief Moon Sr. Wilfred (Ike) Chief Moon Sr., Grace, Karen, Mark, Joe and Thomas Chief Moon. Sophia has numerous nieces, nephews and extended family that she loved dearly as her own.
Sophia grew up on the Blood Tribe, Lethbridge, Calgary, Alberta and British Columbia. She is a member of the Mamio-yiksi (Fish Eater Clan) of the Blood Tribe - Kainai. She attended school in Lavern, Cardston, Kainai Middle School, Kainai High School, Lethbridge and Calgary. Sophia worked numerous jobs in the labour and hospitality field. She also worked at the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede at the Indian Village. Sophia enjoyed travelling to the pow wows with her sisters and grandparents. She made numerous friends along her life journey.
In her younger years, Sophia was raised by her mother: Noreen (Emile) Black Plume and her grandparents: Edwards & Delma Chief Moon. She also grew up with Mary Stella Bare Shin Bone and family. Sophia remained close with her sister’s Thelma Jean and Tania. They were always in separatable. She had a very special bond with all her nieces and nephews, which she considered as her own. Sophia was known for making everyone laugh and her wild ways. She was always outgoing. No fear. Sophia was never scared of anything or to try anything new. Sophia will be missed greatly by all those who have known her. We apologize if we have forgotten names or
acknowledge anyone. Sophia knew a lot of people.
The family would like to ‘Thank’ everyone who prayed for, supported and encouraged the family during this difficult time. Thank you, to the Lethbridge Regional Hospital Physicians, Nurses and Team for supporting the family through a difficult time. Thank you, to Legacy Funeral Home for assisting the family with Sophia’s Final Arrangements. The Family are sorry for anyone who we may have missed. She had numerous friends and family to list.
A wake service will be held at Tanner Senior Centre, Cardston, AB on Friday, February 11, 2022 from 6:00 - 11:00 pm. The funeral service will follow at Tanner Senior Centre, Cardston, AB on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at 11:00 am with interment to follow at Pioneer Cemetery, Blood Reserve, AB.
