She made every person feel genuine love and sincere attention and was known as a beautiful, gracious, and loyal friend. Loree, her siblings, extended family, and friends have maintained close relationships throughout their lives.
Loree was born in Glenwood, Alberta. On the evening of her birth her father and the doctor got stuck in the thick, muddy roads from the pouring rain. By the time both men arrived, Loree, unwilling to wait, was already born with help from Grandmother Law and a midwife. Loree spent her early years there among grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles and others of that small closeknit community. In the summer of 1936, her family moved to Cardston where her Dad became a school principal. In 1944 she graduated from Cardston High School. It was around this time that she met Steele on a blind date.
While at the University of Alberta, Steele and Loree began dating and shortly thereafter became engaged. They were married May 9th, 1946 in the Cardston, Alberta Temple. They lived in Waterton at first then returned to Edmonton for Steele's final two years in med school.
After graduation, Steele and Loree moved to Raymond, where Steele commenced the practice of medicine. Bonny JaLeine was born in Raymond on July 29th, 1948. In April 1949, they moved and settled in Magrath. As a physician’s wife, Loree was very busy raising their children, and serving in
many leadership positions in her Ward & Stake and in the community. Conway Nelson was born on August 21st, 1950 in Magrath. A stillborn son, Michael, followed in February of 1953. Byrne Rhys was born on April 9th, 1955, followed by Cortney Steele on June 17th, 1958. Steele’s medical career took the family to Salt Lake City, then to Hawaii where they created lasting memories & life-long friends. During their time in Hawaii, Steele and Loree made the decision to adopt a child, and adopted Marci Noelani soon after on August 30th, 1961 upon their return to Canada. In February, 1979, Steele, Loree, and Marci moved to Graham, Texas in where Steele worked as a physician for the Graham Hospital Board. Steele and Loree were very involved in the Graham Church and community. While Steele worked the long hours of a doctor, Loree enjoyed spending her time serving in the Dallas Temple and serving on the Hospital Auxiliary.
Loree was a voracious reader, particularly fond of history and politics. Following her dream to obtain a university degree, she enrolled in Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls Texas, earning a B.A. Degree in History & Politics at the age of 63. She graduated summa cum laude at the top of her class with a 4.0 average and was named the Outstanding Graduating Student in the Division of Humanities, earning the President’s Medal of Excellence.
Steele retired from medicine in September 1996, and they subsequently left Texas to serve in the California San Diego Mission which Loree described as a “fairly trying, but very gratifying experience.” Upon the completion of their mission, they decided to stay in California, and settled in Temecula,
where they loved working together in the beautiful San Diego temple. In the fall of 2002, Steele & Loree returned to their native homeland of Canada, moving to Cardston where they lived a couple of doors down from Loree’s sister, Wilda and husband, Kay. Loree and Wilda loved living close
together again in Cardston, and both couples enjoyed callings as Temple workers in the Cardston Temple. In 2015, Steele and Loree moved back to Magrath, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Declining health in the Spring of 2020 required them to move to the Diamond Willow Senior’s Lodge during the Covid Pandemic. While in the Diamond Willow, they celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary. Further health challenges required Steele to move to the Good Samaritan Society Garden Vista Nursing home. Throughout the brief separation, Loree and Steele missed each other dearly, but luckily Loree was able to shortly move back in with her beloved companion. Both were thrilled to be together as that was their most ardent wish.
Through her final years, Loree struggled with gradually worsening shortterm memory loss, although her long-term memory remained amazing.
After Steele’s passing on October 13th, 2023, Loree sorely missed her sweetheart of 77 years. During this difficult time, she loved having family visit, and felt at home with the kind and caring nursing staff. Loree began to lose her appetite and to deteriorate, suffering two falls within the span of two weeks. On Friday, February 16, 2024, Loree spent the day and evening with her daughter, Bonny, then passed away peacefully shortly before midnight.
Loree Brewerton’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated and caring staff of the Good Samaritan Society Garden Vista Nursing home in Magrath for their exceptional kind and loving care during their time there.
