NORMAN REE BROADHEAD passed away on November 24, 2020 surrounded by love at the age of 90 years.
Norman was born in Cardston, AB, on March 16, 1930 to Edward Parley and Mary Ellen (Earl) Broadhead. He was raised on ranches in the Beazer and Mountain View areas. After graduating from high school, he completed an automotive mechanics course which he utilized throughout his work life. With Norman’s faith being strong in Jesus Christ, he accepted a call to serve a mission in New Zealand for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon his return, he married his high school sweetheart, Carma Smith, in the Cardston Alberta Temple in 1953. They started a family, purchased land in Beazer and lived there for the remainder of their years. In addition to ranching, he worked for Parks Canada for 30 years in Waterton Lakes National Park and built and repaired fences in his retirement.
Norman’s love of the outdoors fueled his passions for hiking, hunting, fishing, horseback riding, snowmobiling and quading. He was a man of few words and much solitude. Other hobbies included watching Stampede Wrestling and other various sporting events. Singing was a very important part of his life where he participated in school festivals, ward operettas, and church choirs.
His church and community service included working with young men in the Scouting program and in the Sunday School organization. He served for 18 years with Carma in the French Extraction program and served at the Cardston Temple for five years. Norman served a second mission with Carma in the Canada Winnipeg Mission where they grew to love the people they served.
After Carma passed away in 2003, Norman remarried Clara Valerie Leona Cushman. They lived at the ranch until her passing in 2019. Norman continued his passion for singing participating, in duets with Valerie at various functions. His years with Valerie were spent building, gardening and preparedness where he served his third mission at the Bishops Store House in Lethbridge.
Norman lived a full life where he spent his time working, serving others, enjoying family events and activities and his passions. He will be greatly missed by his ten children: Michael Broadhead of Calgary, Michelle Abbott of High River, Reena (Douglas Lott) Sullivan of Provo, UT, Brenda (Douglas) Jensen of Lethbridge, Danene (Michael) Hartley of Payson, UT, Kameron (Shelann) Broadhead of Payson, UT , Douglas (Barbara) Broadhead of Magrath, Raquelle (David) Shipley of Raymond, Valerie (Charles) Maundrell of Surrey, BC and Jennifer (Randy) Bayona of Sammamish, WA.; 40 grandchildren and their spouses and 22 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law: Norma Broadhead; his brother-in-law: Franklin Smith; his stepsiblings: Don (Sheila) Pierson, Collen (Michael) Kauffman, Kenneth (Carolyn) Pierson; his four stepchildren: Cherie Cressman, Linda Cantillas, Wade (Breanne) Hatch and Robert (Chris) Hatch; 15 step grandchildren and four step great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his loving wives Carma (Smith) Broadhead (1953 – 2003) and Clara Valerie Leona (Cushman) Broadhead (2004 – 2019); his parents and siblings: Delmar (Afton) Broadhead, Pearl, Newel, Grant, LaMonte (Norma) Broadhead and Gwen (Nephi) Richards; his stepmother Velma Harker; his grandchild Noah Abbott, stepchild Curtis Hatch and step grandchild Austin Hatch.
The family would like to offer special thanks to all the doctors and staff for their loving care and support at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, the Cardston General Hospital and the Good Samaritan Lee Crest.
We invite family and friends to meet Norman's family at Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston on Sunday, November 29th from 7:00 - 8:00 pm. Family and Friends will be directed IN THEIR VEHICLES to the north door of the funeral home. As directed friends will park their vehicles and a limit of 10 people will be allowed into the funeral home to meet the family. After friends finish, the next group of vehicles will be parked and ushered in to meet the family. Due to COVID -19 restrictions a Private Family Service will be held at Legacy Funeral Home on Monday, November 30th at 11:00 am.
