It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear mother Iitssoyiikamo’saakii - Barbara Ann at the Cardston Hospital surrounded by family on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at the age of 86 years.
Barbara was born at the Blood Indian Hospital on November 18, 1937 to Ted & Katie Bullshields (nee Wolf Plume). Mom belonged to the Issiisoka’simiisksi clan. Mom was predeceased by the love of her life, Gilbert Crow Chief and spent 70 wonderful years together. There is a beautiful love story of our beloved parents and their union. Mom also leaves behind her only remaining sister Elaine Andrews. Mom held a special bond with Elaine & Elsie’s children. She became sisters to Bertha Weasel Fat, Sophie Tail Feathers,Teresa Mistaken Chief, Martha Day Chief, Judy Fox & Pauline Tallow. Brother and Uncle to Richard Wells, late Charlie Bullshields and brother-in-law Charlie Crow Chief (Betty). Mom leaves behind 5 beautiful daughters - Glenda/Tobi (Rusty), Verda (Marcel), Debbie (Albert), Noreen & Lana (Les). Mom also leaves behind her adopted children: Randy (Anita) Bottle & Penny (Mike) Dan, & Joanne (Stan) Scout, 74 grandchildren, great grandchildren & great great grandchildren. Mom was able to make it to five generations. Mom’s Kipitaipokaiks include: Lana, Wade, Lesley, Kelly, Keisha, Treyson, Kirby, Myla & Trayvon. Mom loved all her grandchildren and adored and helped care for each one.
Christmas was one of the best holidays mom adored so she can dote and spoil everyone including her grown children. No one was ever left out. We at times had to tell mom not to worry about the older children and to concentrate on the younger grandchildren, but she didn’t listen and would just buy for everyone. Mom’s employment included being employed at the old Blood Indian Hospital as a cook and then her employment continued with the old St. Mary’s School doing what she loved, cooking up a storm. Mom had a heart of gold and it showed from family, friends and the community. So many people adored mom and would say how much they loved our mother. Mom had a beam of light shining from her. She loved people so much and would smile and give hugs to everyone. Mom was a very shy, private and simple person. But that didn’t stop her from loving & caring for our people.
Mom will be remembered with her assortment of colorful hats. She looked adorable and looked very cute. Mom was diagnosed with cancer in May of 2023. We met with Dr. Clarke and he informed us mom’s cancer had spread to her lungs. Mom suffered in silence and would never complain or communicate with anyone about her pain. She never wanted us to worry about her and would continue on as if she was not sick. Mom believed strongly in Aatsimoihkaan, prayers and relied on her beliefs and faith and that’s what kept her grounded. She was devoted to the Anglican Church and went to church every Sunday until Covid came around. She also devoted her faith to the traditional ways of our Aakokatsin-Big Holy camp. Mom was a Horn child and spent her younger years always camping with her parents and helping out. Her parents held Pinotoyi the sacred bundle. Their holy brother and partner was the late Pete Weasel Moccasin. Thus, the tradition continued as her children and grandchildren joined and followed in mom and dad’s sacred path and joined sacred societies such as the Horn Society and the Brave Dog Societies. She always supported her children and grandchildren at the big camp. Mom also was a Sundancer with the late Buster Yellow Kidney. Our family would like to thank Dr. Clarke for taking good care of mom. He was always so concerned about mom and her health. How he cared for her, she cared back by taking Dr. Clarke as her son. This was never told to the doctor.
Mom is predeceased by her husband Gilbert, son’s James & Kelly, daughter Arlene (Peewee), her sisters, Ivy Bullshields, Doris Parker, Elsie Vaile, & brothers, Colin & Allen Bullshields and Warner Scout. Grandchildren: Cherie, Tara & Shayla (Wings), baby Shayanne, Mark, Irvin & Tylen. Aunts: Cecile Russell, Jean Calf Robe, Annie Crazy Boy, Rosie Small Eyes, Jenny Eagle Child and Uncle Frank Wolf Plume. Families include: Bull Shields, Russells, Crazy Boy, Calf Robes, Small Eyes, Eagle Child’s, Davis, Blacks, Ayoungman, Jeffersons, Carpenters & LaFarge. Our apologies if we missed anyone. Our hearts are broken but we will always carry on with the message from our mother telling us - Ikkina’pii (patience), I’yi’tsistat (have strength) & Aikimmotsiiyik (love one another). We love you mommy.
