John was born and raised in southern Alberta where he worked at a hardware store, Smyth Motors and Iron Works in Lethbridge. In his early teens, John developed a passion for cars, especially antique cars, which would carry on for a lifetime with him and Donna attending car shows and swap meets all over North America. At the age of sixteen, Dad met the love of his life, Donna, who happened to be the sister of his best friend Duane. John and Donna’s dating years were spent attending many dances which was a true joy for them! John and Donna were married September 15, 1956 in Lethbridge AB. They resided in Lethbridge for one year, followed by a move to Calgary for work. Over the next several years John worked a a courier, a tow truck driver, a car salesman and later began operating the family courier and automotive businesses with Donna. John spent many years raising his three children in Calgary. Countless hours spent driving the kids to functions, friends’ houses and work. Later he kept the kids’ cars running smoothly and financially supported the girls’ trips to the nearby mall. John would continuously instil in the kids, how proud he was of each of them. John and Donna returned to Cardston in 1988 where they operated the family automotive service with their son Robert. John and Donna became Temple workers in 1991, and would continue their service faithfully for the next twenty-one years. In John’s final years he bravely faced cancer, all the while being Donna’s primary caregiver as her dementia progressed. He promised to take care of her, and did so with honour and pride. John’s family would like to thank the staff of Southwood Hospice in Calgary for their compassion and wonderful care, making John’s final days comfortable and filled with love and dignity.
