BERNEICE ALICE COSTANZO, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2024 in Cardston, at the age of 95. Berneice was born in Dryden Ontario, to Margret Louttit and James Reid. She was brought up in Oba, Ontario along with her brother Cecil and sisters Ruby and Dyanne. (Cecil and Ruby have preceded Berneice) When she finished grade school, she went to Toronto to complete her training to be a social worker. She had a great love of children
In 1961 she married Carlo Costanzo of Trieste Italy, to whom she was married to for the rest of their lives. Carlo passed away in 1996.
In 1967 they were able to bring Carlo’s nephew Tino from Italy and they became a family in 1972 when the adoption was completed.
Berneice always wanted to be in the safety of the mountains and be around Church members so in 1968 the family moved to Lethbridge, Alberta. In Lethbridge Berneice ever the one to push herself and the rest of the family had a desire to open a daycare center. They converted a house that they had bought on 3rd ave and made it both their home and the daycare center. In future years they also opened another daycare center on the northside of Lethbridge on 13th st.
Berneice still had a longing to be more in the mountain and after much searching and a vision, they were able to buy a beautiful property at Burmis. Berneice along with children also loved animals , and she had almost every kind there from geese and rabbits, to miniature horses. They also set to work and built a campground and small trailer court, Hiawatha Campground which she ran until 2007. During the early years Carlo and Berneice would take turns running back and forth from Lethbridge to take care of both the daycare centers as well as the campground.
In 2006 she bought a home in Cardston, Alberta to be closer to the temple and fellowship with the church. She demolished the existing house and built a new home there.
Berneice was tireless, eager and full of energy to take on anything that she found a passion for. This was evident in both her personal, academic and spiritual ambitions. Along with the campground and daycare center, she volunteered in the Alberta daycare association, political campaigns and many church callings including serving a 6-month mission in Cardston at the temple.
Berneice 14 years ago got Alzheimer’s and was eventually placed in Lee Crest for the remainder of her life.
Berneice is survived by her son Tino, and his 4 children, Jaime, Crystal, Alessandro and Giuliana. At her passing she was also blessed with 7 great grandchildren. Her energy and zest for gospel and life will be missed. She will be remember fondly by all those she has touched in her life!
A private gathering will be held at a later date.
