Kirby Wallace Crow Chief “Spaiikowan” was born in Cardston on September 27, 1982 to Corina Crow Chief and the late Conrad Long Time Squirrel. His maternal grandparents are the late Wallace (Mary) Crow Chief and the late Tom (Nellie) Long Time Squirrel.
Kirby went to school in Stand Off, St. Mary’s high school and Red Crow Community College. He worked at various jobs on the Blood Reserve, Fort Macleod, Bouvery and Lethbridge Hide Plant. Kirby renovated a few houses on the reserve with Lance Crow Chief. He did some landscaping and worked at the community garden. When he was working with FCSS he did some branding at his uncles William Long Time Squirrel, Melvin Knife and Douglas Many Grey Horses.
As a young boy, he was always helping around the house and yard. He would be down at his late auntie Rose and uncle George’s helping them out too. He was at his auntie’s most of his childhood. He enjoys being with Rose’s family. He learned a lot about our culture through them. Growing up in his 20s, he would go help his uncle Patrick. Kirby learned how to fix vehicles, did carpentry and landscaping with his uncle. Kirby was also a very good cook. He would have delicious cooked meals ready in no time. His favourite meal of the day was breakfast. Mom enjoyed having breakfast with him. At the age of 21 Kirby was gifted with the love of his life his baby girl Alijah Marie Crow Chief. He was so proud of becoming a father. They were inseparable. By the age of four years old Alijah would be following her dad around everywhere asking questions; she was a little chatterbox. Kirby enjoyed every minute that he spent with Alijah throughout the day. Unfortunately, Kirby broke up with Alijah’s mom and they moved away.
Around the same time Kirby was diagnosed with a lung disease, Kirby turned to alcohol to cope but knowing Kirby he remained strong till the time of his passing. Mom tried to convince him to seek spiritual help but he handled it a different way by hanging out with his friends and family; that’s who he was. Every time he ran into his daughter, it really lifted his spirits. Kirby is a funny guy, always joking around and doing silly things. The one story he told mom that made her laugh was when he was working at FCSS. The receptionist asked Kirby if he could answer the phone while she stepped out for a few minutes. He got a call, someone asked if he can page someone in that department. Kirby didn’t know how to page that person, so he just hung up. The person phoned back laughing and told Kirby it was OK that maybe he didn’t know how to page and Kirby apologized. Kirby didn’t have a favourite person, he held everyone close to his heart. Kirby was a very positive compassionate man. During his last days he told his daughter Alijah and his Mom that he loved them. Kirby is one of a kind, and we will miss him tremendously.
Kirby is survived by his beautiful daughters Alijah Crow Chief and Jaylin Young Pine; mother Corina Crow Chief; siblings Gaylene (Troy), Douglas (Ashley), Shawn (Samantha), Chalsea and Matthew; uncles William (Carma) Crow Chief, Patrick Crow Chief, Duayne (Wilma) Crow Chief and William (Mary) Long Time Squirrel; great uncles Charlie Crow Chief, Martin Vielle, Calvin Crow Chief and Clinton Crow Chief; Aunties Georgina Medicine Crane and Bonita Long Time Squirrel; great aunties Annie Davis, Rachel Hoof, Barbara Bullshields, Audrey Tallow, Trina Tallow, Charolette Tallow, Penny and Maxine Big Head; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
