It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, friend, and matriarch, Diane Eaglespeaker, lovingly known by her spiritual name, Back in the Woods Cree Woman. Diane peacefully went home to Creator on May 25, 2026, at the age of 69, surrounded by love.
Diane was born on February 27, 1957, in Glacier County, Montana, to Glen Eaglespeaker and
Leona Guardipee. She was a proud member of the Blood Tribe and Blackfeet Nation and
carried her teachings, culture, and spirituality proudly throughout her life.
Diane dedicated her life to helping others. She worked as a social worker, teacher, mentor,
knowledge keeper, and Sundancer, always guided by her love for community, family, and
Creator. She touched countless lives through her kindness, wisdom, and ability to make people
feel seen, heard, and cared for. Many knew Diane as someone who would adopt others as
family, offering support, laughter, and comfort to anyone who needed it. She was known for her sarcastic humor, teasing nature, quiet strength, sweetness, honesty, and stubbornness. Diane always told it like it was, but behind that honesty was a deeply caring and compassionate woman. Her grandchildren especially knew her as the Nana who always had candy or gum tucked away in her purse and was always willing to share. Diane will always be
known for her unmistakable snazzy fashion and her love of collecting odd items. Diane found joy in puzzles, crafting, thrifting, watching funny cat videos, rock collecting, and walking in nature. Some of her happiest moments were spent medicine picking with her sisters, helping others through her social work, and simply being surrounded by family.
She leaves behind her loving children: Kurt, Whiley, Autumn, Blue, and Melrene. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Forrest, Josh, Willow, Ayonna, Melissa, Lakoda, River, Rain, Sky, Cloud, Rosie, Thunder, Aries, Athena, Tracy, Xander, David, and Leona, along with many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, adopted family members, and dear friends.
Diane is also survived by her siblings: Glenda, Linda, Marlene, and Clyde. She was predeceased by her parents, Glen and Leona, and her brothers Kennith, Dwayne, Neil, and Marlon.
As a spiritual piercing Sundance leader, Diane believed deeply in Creator, ceremony, and the afterlife. While our hearts are broken, we find comfort knowing she is no longer in pain. We know her spirit will continue to guide, protect, and watch over all those she loved. Her impact on this world will live on through the many lives she touched. She will be deeply missed by many. The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, love, support, and kindness during this difficult time.
