John Sheldon First Charger left this earth after a long and difficult battle with diabetes and cancer. A fighter until the end, Sheldon passed away on March 4, 2023 at the age of 52.
Sheldon is the oldest of three siblings. He was privileged to be raised and cared for by his maternal grandmother Bertha First Charger (Flying About) for the first ten years of his childhood. His grandmother instilled traditional Blackfoot cultural values in him. As a child, he was a traditional dancer.
In later years he returned to Vancouver to live with his mother Theresa. Theresa and Sheldon enjoyed living on the west coast and our family would often about hear about their adventures in the city. They both enjoyed the beauty of the mountains and the proximity to the Ocean while living in Vancouver.
After many years of living in Vancouver he relocated to Edmonton and eventually settled in Calgary making this his final home. While in Calgary he met Karen and they welcomed a son, Jericho, in 1998. Sheldon loved his son dearly and was the light of his life. He attended Bow Valley College and held various positions as a roofer.
Sheldon was an extremely talented and visionary artist. He was naturally gifted with creative skills. His creativity and attention to detail was reflected in his substantial personal artwork collection. He was a keen observer of the world around him, who took genuine delight in creative expression. He had the natural ability to creatively draw and paint from his own life experiences. Sheldon continued to paint and draw throughout his life, often drawing inspiration from the places he lived. He was a master of his art, common themes in his collection reflected his adventures throughout the west coast and expressed his pride in his Blackfoot cultural identity.
Sheldon was introverted and shunned the limelight and guarded his privacy, always reluctant to publicly exhibit his work. He did agree to display a select few pieces of artwork that are currently displayed at Alpha House. His art was a representation of the strong, independent, and articulate spirit he was.
John Sheldon was predeceased by his mother, Theresa, father John Pelletier and his youngest brother Michael. He is survived by his son Jericho and his brothers Robbie First Charger and Jeremiah First Charger (Velma).
Loved one that cleared the path for Sheldon are his grandparents Bertha First Charger and Bob First Charger, aunts Margaret, Genevieve, Verna, Nadine, Stella and uncles Jerry and Joseph Crow. Sheldon was part of the Aakapokaiksi Many Children or I’naksiiksi Small Blanket Clan, Pottstakiikski Tea Drinking and the Aisspahkomiksi Shoot Up Clan.
Our family is grateful to know that Sheldon is finally at peace. Sheldon was a kind and thoughtful soul and will be missed and remembered by the many lives he touched. The family would like to thank the residents and staff at Clayton House for the compassion and kindness shown to Sheldon.
