It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a loving father, brother, grand- father, great grand-father, nephew, uncle and friend, Oliver (Awanaan) Gros Ventre Boy, who passed away on April 8, 2023 in Cardston, Alberta at the age of 67 years, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Oliver was born at the Blood Indian Hospital in Cardston on March 11, 1956 to (the late) Cecilia Gros Ventre Boy and (the late) Anthony "Tony" Wolf Child. After the passing of his mother Cecilia, and oldest sister, Molly, Oliver took the role of father figure to several nieces and nephews, as well as younger siblings, who often looked up to him for guidance and advice. Oliver was the kindest person you could ever meet, he was caring and always concerned for his nephews family, and always had a smile on his face. Even during his stay at the hospital, he always smiled at everyone that came to visit, of course after a little cry if he hadn't seen you in a long while. Oliver was very supportive to his only daughter Eleanor whom he loved very much, along with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and long time partner, Wanda. Oliver made sure Eleanor and her children were taken care of, and loved spending time with her. When Eleanor's son, Edward was born Oliver was very happy and he did everything for him up until his passing. Oliver was very hurt by Edwards' passing but always encouraged Eleanor not to give up. Oliver had grown a close relationship with Cobin and always drove around with him and took great care of him. When not at home he would often be found at the casino with his brothers' Jordan and Roland, Eleanor and/or nephew Meldon. He spent a lot of time with adopted son Bobby.
Wanda, Elaine, and Meldon often chaperoned him around, especially after he found out he had cancer, he would often just go for a drive with them. Despite his battle with cancer he kept a good spirit and encouraged his daughter to continue working and not worry about him nor give up. Oliver loved to visit with family and friends at his home, and on the phone. Those answered calls would turn into an hr or so of visiting with family, and he never did make it about him. He often did not want family to worry but encouraged prayer. When Oliver was hospitalized in the weeks before his passing, his niece Wanda was there from day 1, he got used to her being there that when Wanda took a 2 day break twice he knew right away she was not there, and he would keep asking for her. His niece Sami was by his bedside always telling him stories when Eleanor, Wanda and Yvonne would take a walk out of the room.
In his younger years, Oliver spent a lot of time with cousin Steven Crying Head, and brother Jordan riding horses and winters spent skating at ponds and the river in Little Chicago. Oliver attended St. Mary's Residential school, and grew up in the Little Chicago, and Levern area, and his early adulthood in Standoff, where he met Esther and together they had Eleanor. Later moving back to Little Chicago where he resided with his mother and siblings until she acquired their permanent home in Farm Headquarters, it was here that he spent a lot of time with his other cousin Steven Calf Robe. Then his mother was given a new home in Moses Lake where they moved to, where he would often be found visiting with mom in the early mornings having mint tea. He resided there with his daughter and grandchildren until his passing.
Oliver's past time with his mother was putting together puzzles, and was especially proud to be able to tackle a 3D puzzle. He loved working on vehicles, was a mechanic and showed his brothers' Robert and Jordan how to fix vehicles. He worked on the Waterton highway driving heavy machinery, was a skilled laborer, he was a jack of all trades.
