PHILIP DAVID HATCH was born in Cardston, Alberta, Canada on April 9, 1956 and passed away on March 25, 2026 at age 69.  He was the 4th of 5 children born to David Morton Hatch and Lorna LaRee Broadbent.  Philip grew up roaming the hills on his family farm in Woolford, enjoying the beaches in sunny California and then back to Cardston where he finished his schooling.  He married Debra Jorgensen in 1977 and they later divorced.
He worked many jobs, including ranching, construction, lumber, farming, roofing and then finding his talent in concrete work where he ended up having his own business. With concrete, Phil was a master craftsman and an artist. His work was very respected. He did the concrete work for the famed Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton National Park. He did the concrete work for the Cardston Alberta Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He did sidewalks and wheelchair ramps all over Cardston and other southern Alberta towns. He provided beautiful concrete work for schools, churches, public buildings, colleges, large department chains in Lethbridge and driveways for homes. Phil made us all proud with the artistic work he did for the Indigenous people on the Healing Garden and Monument in Cardston. His beautiful concrete work is a great legacy.
Phil is most well known as a gifted musician. He could play almost any instrument that he picked up. He played drums and then bass in many bands and in many places.  He joined his first band at age 14. We don’t recall the names of all the bands he played in, but some were Country Road, Gimli, Seventh Street West Band, Those Other Guys, Roller and most recently with his friend, Dave Kenworthy.  Two days before his passing, he performed with Dave at Lee Crest in Cardston for Family Home Evening. He was singing and playing his guitar until the end.
Phil was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  His mother loved having him come and sit next to her at church when she lived at the Chinook. He came daily to see his mother and was such a devoted son.
Phil was kind. It seemed like he knew everyone’s name and we couldn’t go downtown without him stopping to talk to those he passed. His kindness also extended to animals. He always had a dog and often a cat. His dogs went everywhere with him. He did not like to leave them home. Frequently Phil would take leftovers down to a place in town where stray dogs roamed and he would feed them.
Phil was pre-deceased by his father and mother and his brother-in-law, Grant Nelson.  He is survived by his sisters, Connie (Grant deceased) Nelson, Judi (Randy) Sant and his brothers Dan (Doreen) Hatch and Mike Hatch and 16 nieces and nephews.  His nieces and nephews thought he was very cool with his bands and motorcycles.
We will miss seeing his yellow truck on main street and hearing his Harley pulling into the driveway.  Mostly we will miss his kind, gentle ways, his quick wit and his sense of humor. We love you Phil.
