It's with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of a brother, uncle, and a cousin, GILBERT BALDWIN HEALY, Issininomahka, Coup Front Gun Runner. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 30, 2019, at the age of 82. He’ll be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. He’s one of the last known members from Kainai/Blood Tribe to have survived the Korean War. In 1958 the United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a five-star general during World War II, presented Gilbert with a medal in Washington, D.C. this was one of the numerous highlights he experienced as a Soldier. He lived a colorful and eventful life as he traveled all over the world and stood on the lands of Germany, Holland, and Denmark. He travelled through the United States and Canada and could tell many stories. When Gilbert returned home after the war, he joined one of our spiritual societies, and became a pipe holder. He eventually settled in the place he fought for and called home. On our traditional land, Siksikaitsitapi (Blackfoot Territory), the Blood Reserve (Kainai). During his lifetime he was employed with various companies and employers that offered interesting working environments. This included fruit picking, which he did with different orchards in Canada and the United States. He also enjoyed working as a ranch hand which sparked his interest into a career as a cowboy. He was a trailblazer in every aspect of the word. Gilbert lead a life of adventure only a few ever experience. We enjoyed listening to all his stories every time he returned home. Gilbert eventually moved home to help his father (Art Healy), with his race horses. His adventure seeking personality was never abandoned. His adventures as a paratrooper had its consequences, jumping off warplanes into battles during the war hindered his walking. He had a steel rod in one of his legs. This injury did not deter him from visiting places that intrigued him. His stories of adventure will be sadly missed by all. At the time of his passing, Gilbert was residing at the Fort Macleod Extended Care facility. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him, Including his son Randall Hoof and special friend Christine Little Bear. Gilbert comes from a huge family that includes the Mills, Healy's, Crow Chiefs. Kings, Melting Tallows, Soops, Tallows and others too numerous to mention. He is survived by his Mills siblings William, Alex, David, Judy, and Faye; by his Healy siblings: Del, Bella, Shelia, Fern, Lila, and Jessie. Deceased: his mother Marie Bumblebee and Adam, his deceased Healy family includes his father Arthur Healy Sr, siblings: Sylvia Eagle Child, Louise Chief Body, Mildred Jerry, Maria Hunt, Rita Tallman, Arthur jr., Winston, Jordan, Patsy, Burton, and Ferry Healy.
