It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of SONIA LEE MILLS at the age of 50 years old. Sonia passed away with her loving husband, Alvin Trotchie by her side, and surrounded by her loving family, at the Chinook Regional Hospital on November 30, 2022. Sonia was born to late Edith Little Child and George Provost on the Blood Indian Reserve and raised by her late maternal grandparents Christopher “Buster” and Eva Mills alongside her maternal late uncle Richard Mills. She was also very close to Teresa K. Healy, whom she took as a second mother. Sonia was very supported, nurtured and spoiled and was taught the values of our traditional ways by attending sweats with her grandmother, Sonia grew up respecting her elders and families and understood our Blackfoot language very well.
Sonia was very smart, outgoing and very practical, she was always the one to be picked to hang out, but she never left her sister Leslie out, she always made sure she tagged along. Sonia was very close to her cousin’s especially the late Jessica Many Fingers and late Natalie Mills. She was always looking out for her younger cousins Garrett, Todd, Mousie, Harry, Francine, Ashley, Clark, Eva, Tylisha, Shane, Tim and especially Brian, and was a second mom to her nieces Haley and Cammi. She loved all her special cousins, nephews and nieces. Sonia was known to always pull practical jokes on everybody, one time her cousin Todd was sitting on the couch saying his rosaries calling for our lord with his eyes closed and Sonia stood above him with her face close to his, he must of sensed something, when he opened his eyes Sonias face was right there, startled he began chocking her and they both started screaming, Todd was pretty upset with her to say the least. Sonia was also known to “pants” her friends and family, so if you were wearing the wrong kind of pants you had better be watching out for her.
Sonia attended Cardston High School where she met a lot of her friends who became sisters and brothers to her. She was especially close to Maria Healy, Roberta Wells, Melanie Healy, Nada Wolf Child, Tresa First Rider, Lee Boy Melting Tallow, Cordel Healy, Sandra Soop, Natasha Standing Alone, Roberta Wells and so many more. Sonia excelled in school as she was very smart and creative, she had a passion for drawing and was a very good artist.
Sonia began working at a very young age with her first job being at 7/11, during this time she stayed with her cousin Marvin Manyfingers and his wife Trina along with her sister’s, Leslie and late Natalie Mills. Sonia and Leslie would keep Marvin and Trina preoccupied asking about how their day was while Nat would be sneaking up the fire escape with a case of beer, however, shortly after Marvin would come in and say, “where’s your beer?”, Trina never did catch on as she always thought of the girls as good girls. Sonia was also a teacher’s assistant and worked for Kainai Board of Education and West Wind School Division, she was a great asset to wherever she worked as she loved working with kids and was very creative in helping her students excel. Sonia enjoyed reading, cooking, arts and crafts; she was called on many times by family as she was always there to help
In 1992, Sonia was blessed with her baby boy Lyndon Jade Mills; she was so happy to be blessed with her son and was very proud of him. Jade further blessed Sonia with 5 grandchildren – Richard, Peyton, Destiny, Kevin and Nelo who she loved so much. Later in 2008, to Sonia’s surprise she was further blessed with her baby girl late Shyla Edith Genevieve, Sonia would dress Shyla up in the girl’s clothes for their dolls and take numerous pictures of her, she was so fond of her children and loved them unconditionally.
Because Sonia was raised by her grandparents, she was very close to her younger aunties Evelyn and late Liza, she was always joking around with them and teasing them but was there whenever they needed her.
Sonia was predeceased by her parents George Provost and Edith Little Child, her maternal grandparents Buster and Eva Mills, her brother Shawn Patrick Kelly, Ryan North Pegian and Cory Little Child, uncles, Christopher Mills Jr, Richard Mills, Delbert Mills, Franco Mills, aunts, Virginia Mills, Loretta Many Fingers, Gloria Shade, Mary Rose Many Fingers, Thresa Provost, and Liza Mills
