JERRY DALE NELSON, 77, passed away peacefully on August 20th, 2024, at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital. Jerry was born on July 13th, 1947, along with his twin sister Judy Ferguson (Nee-Nelson) in Emo Ontario to loving parents Floyd and Lillian Nelson. Jerry preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings Stanley, Roger, Dennis, and Shirley. Dad met Jean in Rainy River, Ontario. They were married in 1970 and in the coming years, they welcomed 3 boys to help in the family adventure. On May 23rd, 1998, Jerry married his late wife Lola Lynn (Dodie) where they had 18 years of a loving marriage and great memories.
Jerry was a loving and caring father to sons Duane Nelson (Gaylene), Troy Nelson (deceased) and Ryan Nelson (Zita) and stepfather to Brad Hyggen (Sandy), Brandon Hyggen (Marilyn), Blaine Hyggen (Jennifer), Braylon Hyggen (Lisa), Lara Hall-Jensen (Russ), and Blake Hyggen (Jennifer). Jerry’s pride and joy was found within his grandchildren and step-grandchildren. His favourite pastime was spending time with any one of the 24 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Jerry grew up in Bergland, Ontario where his love for the outdoors was formed. He could be found fishing, hunting and being a fishing guide on Lake of the Woods. Jerry created countless impressions and memories within Ontario, where people still talk about him to this day.
Jerry’s career in mining started in Atikokan, Ontario in an iron ore mine called Caland Ore. When opportunities arose to move his family out west to the British Columbia Coal mines, Jerry welcomed this change with a positive attitude. He started his admirable coal mining career at Kaiser Resources in 1980, where he brought his great skills to operate the large mining equipment. In 1983, Jerry took the opportunity to join a new mine called Line Creek, where he was one of the first operators hired. He contributed greatly to this mine site until his retirement on June 30th, 2009. After he retired from coal mining, his love for work and service was focused on the Village of Stirling, where he operated the town grader and loved to wave to everyone as he worked.
Jerry made a lasting impression wherever he lived. Whether it was baking bread for the whole neighbourhood, or doing drywall for whoever was in need, Jerry was always the first to lend a helping hand. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved to serve in any capacity. He had and loved many callings, with his favorite being a home teacher, and a stake missionary.
