“Iihtsakow’pai nihkii -Backup Singer”
We are saddened by the sudden passing of our beloved and oldest grandson, Cody Prairie Chicken (Many Fingers). Cody was called home to our Creator on August 26, 2023 at the Galt Gardens in Lethbridge, Alberta. He was born at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital on October 14, 1987.
Cody is survived by his special son Alias and daughter Mia. He is also survived by his Dad Allan Prairie Chicken Jr. And sister Shyanne Flemming (Nathan Wells) and nephew Noah; grandparents Randolph and Marjorie Many Fingers; aunties and uncles Randi Lynn and Leon Many Fingers, Roger (Charlene), Calvin Luke, Andrew, Karen and Mike (Deanna) Prairie Chicken.
Cody and his mother Jeanine moved to Calgary and went to Elementary and Junior High there. He played different sports but hockey came to him naturally. His team won Minor Hockey Championship in Calgary. They moved back to Lethbridge where he attended Catholic Central High School. His interest in started here especially his guitar playing. He played on different rock bands in Lethbridge and would travel to other towns and cities like Calgary. After high school he entered Red Crow College off campus and his interest was in carpentry, where he got different jobs in this field. He then worked in restaurants and he eventually got his Culinary Arts Diploma. His main interests were his music, skateboarding and his children.
Cody spent his early years with his Prairie Chicken family. He was grandma’s baby, he ran the house, wrapped around grandma’s finger. The love they had was a bond they shared, Cody still talked about his grandma a lot. Always missing the woman who fulfilled all his little heart’s desires. He travelled a lot to various pow-wows and fairs. Grandma and grandpa would take all the grandsons on trips and then all the granddaughters. He enjoyed these trips and always reminisced about the time grandma made him a cowboy. After the passing of his beloved grandma, Cody went to live in Calgary.
We were bless to be reunited with Cody in his teen years. By that time Cody already had a passion for skateboarding. You would see Cody and his skateboard wherever there was pavement, didn’t matter where, Cody was always determined to conquer any concrete structure. Some were often dangerous, Cody literally laughed in the face of danger. He loved his board.
Cody was a talented musician, music was his calling. He could play any instrument and if he didn’t know , he would always say “I could always give it a try, nothing wrong with trying”. Most often than not, Cody would learn enough or more to play a few chords of a song. He performed a different venues in Southern Alberta. He loved sharing his music with everyone. Rip Hickie was born. Confident and charismatic Cody was always able to win over anyone's heart. Once you were friends with Cody, you were family. You had a place in his heart and Cody definitely had a place in everyone’s heart. Cody is unforgettable and irreplaceable. You’ll never find anyone as unique as Cody. He will be beyond missed by all those who were blessed to love and be loved by him.
A few months ago he got caught in the addictions of drugs and alcohol and this was his downfall. All of us on the reserve are affected by this disease and are very thankful for the people that are trying to help these individuals overcome this tragedy.
