LYLE MERVIN PRETE, beloved husband of Trudy Woods Prete, passed away in Cardston, Alberta in his home surrounded by family on Monday January 15, 2024, just two weeks shy of his 94th birthday. He was born in St. Brieux, Saskatchewan on January 30, 1930. He was the ninth of twelve children born to John Henry Prete and Mae Cornelia Englesby. He grew up just outside of St. Brieux on their family farm. He worked on the farm along with his dad and brothers for all those years. He married Trudy Woods July 24th, 1953 in Melfort, Saskatchewan. They had a double wedding ceremony with his brother Norman Prete and Trudy’s sister Clara Woods. Their first 3 children were born while living in Melfort. Lylia, Laura and Larry. Lyle and Trudy then moved to Alberta where they had their next 3 children. Randy, Ruby and Brenda. They moved to Alberta to where they felt the church was stronger and would be a better location to raise their children. Lyle was the jack of all trades, there wasn't a job he couldn’t do. He was the handiest man around. He farmed, ranched, was a great welder, loved to invent anything to make any task easier. After retirement he spent about 20 years swathing for his son-in-law Merlin Bevans. In 2010 they moved to the Bevans farm. When he could no longer swath he took over mowing the lawns on their John Deere mower. He believed that you never let the truth get in the way of a good story. He referred to himself as an Italian stallion and loved to pretend he belonged to the Italian Mafia. Lyle loved to play and make memories with his friends and family. Many of his children and grandchildren cherish lots of memories of fishing, snowmobiling, hunting, boating, quading and camping. Lyle and Trudy loved to garden and always had the most beautiful yard around. There is nothing as important to him as his family and his wife, they were his whole world. If you ask his family, they would all say they were his favorite. Which just shows how he loved them and the kind of man he was. Lyle always had a good joke to share and had the best sense of humor which made everyone better for being around him. Although he didn’t always openly express his feelings, the Gospel was dear to him, and he led by example. He was an honest, kind and considerate man.
His mischievous smile and the twinkle in his eye will be dearly missed by us all, he was definitely one of the good ones.
