Alyssa was born on September 17, 1992 in Cardston. She was raised as a Kiipiitapooka by her grandmother Jeanette Wells and her grandpa’s Chester Davis and Albert Day Rider. They loved and cherished Alyssa and often had little stories of how she was in a cute and funny way. Alyssa had a favorite pair of purple gum boots that she never took off and wore all the time. She grew up in the farm four area with her siblings and cousins. She also had a special relationship with her paternal grandpa Albert Rabbit and was always so fond of him. Alyssa had a very strong bond with her grandmother Iimiiyakii and she often bragged about her yeast buns being the best. Alyssa cherished her and all her other grandparents and was guided by them for love and support and direction. Alyssa went to many schools in her young life such as Levern, Cardston, Lethbridge and St. Mary’s. She was an excellent basketball player and bragged about getting many 3 pointers. She would always carry around her basketball and had admired many basketball All Stars in the NBA. During her time at school she met Blaine and they carried on with their love of basketball and had their beautiful baby girl Cianna. She then met Lyndon and had Miley and Phoenix and all three of her daughters were the loves of her life. Alyssa had a love for running and the great outdoors especially Waterton. She loved swimming in St. Mary’s Lake and enjoyed her many trips to Wally’s Beach swimming with her daughters. She loved gardening, planting flowers, fishing with her family; she especially loved her cats Little Foot, Tootoroo, Tito and White Guy. She also had a hobby of making dream catchers, crafting with her daughters, watching, movies, listening to music, camping, BBQs and especially birthday celebrations. Alyssa had a welcoming and bright presence which would be felt in every room she walked in. As a child she often made friends everywhere she lived, even the local neighbors knew her and there were friendships made with their children. She had faith so strong that she knew the mass by heart and would sing her heart out in church. She travelled to Vancouver BC with Grandma Doreen for prayers and healing with Lorna Keras. Alyssa also flew to Gatineau, Quebec with her mother, Auntie Nicole, cousin Ali, and great aunt Christina to attend the National Gathering for the Survivors Circle for Reproductive Justice. She was a survivor of forced sterilizations without her free, prior, and informed consent, and injustice carried by so many Indigenous women across this country. She held steady hope that the Bill S-228 recognizing this harm would become law. Though she did not live to see that day, her courage in waiting for justice, and in surviving what was taken from her, remains a testament to her strength.  Despite her pain she still had the strength of a Polar Bear, (a name her sister called her jokingly). She struggled with her hardships and did the best she could often up lifting others and encouraging them to try hard. Alyssa loved her family always ensuring that they were taken care of and always said “I Love U” and gave the best hugs. Alyssa was more than her struggles. She fought hard but it never took away her sparkle or her will to keep going. Alyssa loved being with her daughters and would cherish every moment she spent with them. Despite every obstacle she managed to spend every birthday and all special occasions with her daughters. Her mom and dad, her brother and sisters. We will remember the beautiful person you were and the light you brought into our lives. Alyssa you will forever be in our hearts and we will treasure the wonderful memories you left with all of us. You will forever and sadly be missed.
