PERKINS
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Iikinapiitapii (Gentle Man) Monte Darren Rabbit he leaves behind a legacy of kindness. Many will miss Monte but there is a deep sense of emptiness in those who loved him dearly: Wife, Corrie-ann Weasel Moccasin, his son Davey (Kailey) their children, Karter & Kohen and his daughter Whitney; Parents, Marilyn & Alphonse Standing Alone; Adoptive Parents, Barry & Colleen Beebe; Brothers and Sisters, Jason (Dodi) Rabbit, Garrett (Corrine), Missy (Rueben), Billie-Jean (Joey); Uncle Albert (Jennifer) Rabbit, Aunties Christina Fox and Katie (Dallas) Young Pine; the girls, Linda, Melanie, Candice and Katie-Jo. Although Monte would want each and every one of his cousins and friends named specifically, we apologize, there are too many of you to mention, remember he loved you. Montes story began January 15,1971 a most joyful time for Gramma Rita and Grandpa Bill, he became their little ‘Gentle Man’. Monte was a kipitapokaa, he was a kind and gentle little guy and quite content. Marilyn had no choice in the matter. She happily resumed her role as ‘mom’ after we lost gramma and grandpa. Every one of us in the family loved Monte. He was a good companion and care giver for Bill and Rita. Monte did not mind being the family chauffeur for the old folks. He looked forward to weekends because in summer he would drive them to all the IRCA rodeos and in winter it was going to hockey games, he loved travelling. For the younger cousins and his buddies Monte was their designated driver, he made it his job to get everyone home safe and sound, he was so dependable. He used these times to give advice, to talk some sense to his siblings, cousins or buddies, they listened, but the next time they needed a designated driver, if he was not driving mom and dad anywhere, he agreed to cruise with the boys or girls, never judgemental but more concerned for their safety. Depending on who he was hanging out with, Monte was also known as Hawkeye, Perkins, or Dad. We do not know where the nickname of ‘Perkins’ came from, those who called him Perkins have their own version, we will never really know the truth. Monte preferred and liked the sound of ‘Dad’, it was confirmation of one of his achievements. Monte and Corrie met through a mutual friend in 1996. They often cruised the reserve with friends eventually turning into just the two of them enjoying time together. Monte never failed to put an extra five dollars in Corrie’s gas tank. 1997 was the year they started their family. Monte was ecstatic about becoming a father. His first love was his family, then his siblings, then Beef Jerky. Davey and Whitney were raised to be humble, kind hearted and responsible adults. Whitney was a daddy’s girl they were always together. When Monte started to experience physical challenges, Whitney and Corrie were his caregivers and made sure he was okay. Monte was proud of Davey and his educational accomplishments. Davey did not know this, but we were called often to get an update on his exam scores, it was not bragging it was a father being proud. When Davey brought two grandsons, Karter and Kohen into the family Monte’s love grew bigger. He talked about his grandsons with pride and joy. Through the years Monte stayed connected to his mom eventually more involved developing a special bond when grandma and grandpa passed on. While he supported the endeavors of his mom and siblings, he also, depended on them for many things; they organized their day to ensure Monte attended his medical appointments. He never missed a family gathering, he loved being amongst his brothers and sisters and their families. His midnight snacks were delivered to his house, he called Missy sometimes casually mentioning a craving for pizza, soon after she knocked on the door with a pizza for him. When Monte worked weird hours as Security for the Blood Band Farms, family came through to get him to work when his own vehicle was not running. Thanks to Garretts mechanical expertise Monte would soon be driving himself to work or cruising with Whitney to visit family. Monte lived a good life despite his physical challenges, he never let his illness get him down. It is not an exaggeration to say Monte did not get into arguments or fight with anyone. If he did not agree with you his famous response was simply ‘arrrrre’, we knew then he was not happy with something, but he did not complain. He made his friends on the rodeo trail, on the powwow trail as a traditional dancer, and in the hockey arena. He played hockey, became a coach and most recently a mentor for his nieces and nephews, the guy knew a little about training techniques, he did a lot of that as a young man. He was a ‘go to’ babysitter, he watched over the young ones and on occasion dabbled in pet sitting. He did such a good job the little kidlets and animals did not want to go home. Monte is now one of the family members in the Spirit world who we will call upon in prayer alongside Nelson & Katie Rabbit, Bill & Rita Rabbit, Larry & Patsy Rabbit, Dorothy Rabbit, Calvin & Rose Red Crow, Uncle George Day Rider and many many relatives. On behalf of the family we thank Dr. Tailfeathers and all other medical personnel who cared for him when he was in hospital.
A Wake Service will be held at Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston on Sunday, May 24th from 4:00 - 8:00 pm. A Viewing will be held on Monday, May 25th from 9:30 - 11:00 with a Private Family Service to follow at 11:30 am.
